New work featuring in our presentation at @designmiami Seoul by South Korean artist @weonrhee

Primitive Structures, Farm, 2026

Drawing on memories of growing up in rural South Korea, Rhee transforms engineered timber through carving, reconstruction and colour, creating sculptural forms that sit between the familiar and the imagined.

With its layered surface and organic, almost geological presence, Primitive Structures, Farm reflects Rhee’s interest in how memories can shift and take on new forms over time.

On view 31 Aug – 6 Sept 2026, Dongdaemun Design Plaza.

Weon Rhee (@weonrhee) is a Seoul-based artist and designer making some of the most fascinating work we’ve come across lately. His sculptures explore growth, erosion, and transformation, the quiet forces that shape everything around us, and he builds nearly all of it from a single unexpected material: PSL, an engineered lumber made from compressed strands of waste wood. In his hands, an industrial building material starts to look like sedimentary rock, fossils, and geological strata formed over thousands of years.

Weon grew up around his family’s mushroom farm, where he developed an early sensitivity to cycles of growth and decay that still runs through everything he makes. He was selected for Salone Satellite in Milan, where he won the Salone Satellite Award, and was a finalist for the 2024 Loewe Craft Prize. His recent solo exhibition, Silent Kinetic at KiNN Curated in Seoul, brought together works from his Primitive Structures and Unearthed Forms series, exploring forms that feel quiet and dynamic at once.

Each piece carries its own narrative. Scotty took its initial spark from the famous T. rex fossil of the same name, with spine-like elements running through the table, brushed white oak that recalls sediment being cleared away during an excavation, and two substantial legs that nod to a T. rex on its feet. We Come From Far Away grew out of a three-month residency in Japan, where an intense period of isolation led Weon to imagine himself as a meteorite arriving to transform unfamiliar ground. He embedded his PSL beams into abandoned blocks of Japanese camphor wood, letting one material slowly erode and reshape the other.

We talked with Weon about where these narratives come from, how he knows when a piece is done, and the ecosystems he wants to build next.
