Inspired by one of North America’s most familiar birds, QCP’s latest collaboration with lauded landscape design firm West 8 was created for connection and comfort. The Sparrow is a modular outdoor seating collection comprising QCP’s precast concrete and upcycled wood sourced from Street Tree Revival, a program that saves trees from ending up in landfills and upcycles the wood as urban lumber. What makes a water city – and who shapes its future?

On 28-29 September we hosted the international public conference WATER_CITY WHERE NEXT? in Hamburg @gleishalle_oberhafen as part of this year’s @hamburgerarchitektursommer.

500 guests and 45 speakers from 22 cities debated a broad range of issues regarding water-related urban design, development and architecture: from large-scale city visions, to climate-adaptation and flood protection, to water as a shared resource, to riverscapes as places of creativity and production.

On day 2 a roundtable with the directors of Hamburg’s main cultural institutions (@deichtorhallenhamburg, @literaturhaushamburg, @hfbkhamburg, @kampnagel_hamburg) opened up the debate, followed by keynotes (among them Prof. Günther Vogt + Prof. Adriaan Geuze) and nine thematic panels, that explored the water city from multiple perspectives.

We will now start to reflect the results, which will be published soon in @bauweltmagazine.

A small full-circle moment: visiting Markthal Appeldoorn and seeing work you once helped shape out in the world.

I worked on this project with Chiara Pepori during our time at West8, at different moments within a much wider team. Chiara is now at BIG, and it was such a joy to revisit the project together and see how it has taken on a life of its own.

It is also the first completed timber structure I have worked on. Seeing the material, light and everyday use come together at full scale is genuinely inspiring. Hopefully the first of many.

The Number 8 Bridge of Amsterdam:
Pythonbrug

Pythonbrug means “Python Bridge” in Dutch (shocking news, I know). Its bright red, snake-like shape makes it one of Amsterdam’s most recognizable modern bridges.

💡 FUN FACT:
The bridge was nicknamed Anaconda, Salamander and Dinosaur Bridge, but eventually became known as the Python Bridge.

💡 FUN FACT:
Its curved streetlights were designed to resemble the stretched-out heads of seagulls.

Art to interact with, not just look at! 🏛️✨
This concept introduces hybrid functionality, merging contemporary art with eco-urbanism. An exclusive architectural feature designed to align with the vision of global landscape innovators @jamescornerfieldoperations, @sasaki.design, @west8design, and next-gen play space creators @kompan and @landscape_structures:
🔥 A single sculpture serves as a high-end art piece, a safe climbing wall, an integrated slide, and a designer swing.
🟢 Workout Art Museum: Calisthenics zones integrated into clean geometric sculptures.
🟢 Next-Gen Playgrounds: Lawn sculptures double as play objects to foster aesthetic taste.
🟢 Living Labyrinth: An intricately shaped green maze connecting both zones.
Art must inspire movement! 🌿💪 Sharing this vision with global platforms @designboom, @dezeen, @archdaily, and @chateaulacoste.

West 8 + DTAH win Waterfront Toronto Design Review Panel Awards!

On July 22, 2026, Waterfront Toronto hosted the 2nd Waterfront Design Review Panel Awards in their stunning T3 Bayside office. As well as honouring legacy projects of the iconic waterfront, the bi-annual awards were created to celebrate and recognize design excellence for projects that were completed in the design review panel process over the last three years.

Two projects by West 8+DTAH were awarded in the Hall of Fame category. Queens Quay West and The Water’s Edge Promenade were applauded for their lasting impact and contribution. These earlier works set the tone for high-quality public space and have informed what is possible elsewhere in the city and afar.

As designers of the overall masterplan for the Toronto Central Waterfront, West 8 + DTAH would like to thank Waterfront Toronto, the Design Review Panel, the City of Toronto, and our many collaborators for this rewarding relationship. Over the past two decades, we have seen Toronto’s waterfront blossom and become one of Canada’s great places.

At Marc Koehler Associates, we specialize in hybrid, high-rise Superblocks — resilient mixed-use residential communities in high-density, pedestrianised micro-neigborhoods.

Strijp S is an urban village that makes smart use of scarce urban space by combining housing, shared facilities, mobility, and a vibrant plinth, built around an acoustically shielded, child-friendly pocket park designed by West 8 as part of their masterplan.

Through a climate adaptation-conscious building approach, in which sun orientation, generous outdoor spaces, window openings, shading, wind and water management, urban ecology and traffic noise mitigation are combined with energy-efficient building services, we create human-centered and resilient urban villages.

At Strijp-S in Eindhoven, this vision comes to life through Spark and EXO: two towers, one Superblock. EXO rises light and tall, a landmark building framed by its refined exoskeleton, tapered silhouette, and sunlit balconies. Beside it stands Spark, a smaller, monumental brick tower with playful, sculptural ornamentation. Together, they anchor a vibrant urban village at Strijp-S4. The two towers are connected by a small-scale terraced housing block, designed by Jasper Smit, that relates to the scale of the surrounding Philips neighbourhood.

The Superblock also integrates buildings by @arons_en_gelauff_architecten and @officewinhov. The co-creation process altogether was inspiring and resulted in a diverse and funky yet harmonious ensemble.
