West 8 has been selected to design the Rijnhaven Floating Park South as a new floating landscape that brings urban nature, recreation, and biodiversity into the heart of Rotterdam!

Inspired by the diversity of local delta landscapes, our vision is to transform the southern edge of the Rijnhaven into an archipelago of wetlands for kayaking, framed by a floating woodland. Together with the Municipality of Rotterdam and local stakeholders, we look forward to creating a new destination where ecology, public life and the city’s maritime identity come together.
Since our founding in Hotel New York almost 40 years ago, our studio has overlooked the Rijnhaven for decades. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to help shape its next chapter.

In Conversation Series | Landscape Across Contexts

Infrastructure. Ecology. Public life

16th April, Thursday

From expansion and reclamation to rapid infrastructure development, urban change is continuous. In Mumbai today, many such projects sit at the threshold of ecologically sensitive areas, responding to urban demands while raising critical environmental concerns.

This session brings together diverse perspectives to reflect on how these transformations are imagined, realised, and built. With insights from West 8, the conversation opens up a broader inquiry into how landscape adapts to urban needs while maintaining a focus on people-centred landscapes, even amid infrastructural transformations in cities.

In times that demand constant action, we also need spaces for reflection, dialogue, and critical thought,

Project Xiaoliangtan Garden in China, by West 8:

"West 8 was invited to design and create a garden for the 2024 Chengdu World Horticultural Expo. Entitled Xiaoliangtan, the garden celebrates natural, low-tech solutions to create a reduced microclimate and pleasant atmosphere to explore. Reminiscent of Sichuan people meeting, gathering and inhabiting the flowing streams during warm weather, the garden combines sloping topography, a created tree canopy and gently flowing waters. Together, these elements invite guests to sit down on the stone edges, place their feet in the stream, relax and connect visitors with the cultural memory."
