Rhodesia was once the bread basket of the African continent. Following Rhodesia’s transition to majority rule and independence as Zimbabwe in 1980, the economy initially experienced significant growth. However, economic deterioration accelerated during the 1990s and became catastrophic in the 2000s under Robert Mugabe’s government. Corruption, mounting government debt, economic mismanagement, and controversial land reforms severely undermined agricultural production, particularly commercial farming, which had been a major source of exports and foreign currency.

The government’s seizure and redistribution of many White-owned commercial farms, often without adequate support for new farmers, disrupted agricultural output and contributed to food shortages. Declining investor confidence, collapsing industrial production, and excessive money creation subsequently produced hyperinflation, reaching extraordinary levels in 2008. Zimbabwe eventually abandoned its national currency in 2009 in favor of foreign currencies, including the U.S. dollar.

This clip for an old documentary is a perfect example of what Rhodesians were fighting for, which was a Western country in the African interior that gradually integrated Black Rhodesians.

As of October 18, 2026, France is experiencing some of its worst civil unrest in years, with widespread riots, arson, looting, and violent clashes with police across Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, and other cities. Protests initially sparked by deteriorating school conditions have escalated into nationwide demonstrations against rising living costs, declining public services, and President Emmanuel Macron’s government.

Historic buildings, churches, and centuries-old cultural landmarks have suffered fires, vandalism, and theft, raising serious concerns about the preservation of France’s architectural and cultural heritage. Despite police interventions and restoration efforts, recurring unrest and attacks on historic sites have fueled a growing perception that France is failing to adequately protect its cultural inheritance. #france #paris
