POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Please listen to the end.
The role of art is to save lives. It forces us to ask uncomfortable questions, look at awful truths and still somehow reach for beauty.
When I played the role of Cathy in East of Eden so many years ago, I arrived to the theatre as a survivor (#iamjanedoe). Working on Cathy was the first time I felt I didn’t have to apologize for anything, to feel the magnitude of my own power. Cathy’s Salinas was not so different from the Salinas that I lived in. Everyone kept saying oh she’s such a monster how is it to immerse yourself in that? But to me, she was an escape artist. A woman who just desperately wanted freedom and control of her own body. And here we are in 2026 and people are discussing how evil or not evil she was. Not that her husband Adam ignored his children for years and also abandoned them in his own way. Not that the reality for women was unacceptable at the time. I think I returned to her over the years, especially in my sensory work with Salome Jens of the Actors Studio, because there is something about this woman and her poisonous apothecary that just clicked. That felt like liberation and resistance. An actors job isn’t to judge who it is they play, it is to put themselves in those exact circumstances and ask yourself what would make you do x, y and z?
Watching @zoe.kazan s production and @florencepugh s performance is just filling my heart with joy. Instead of an oversimplified villain, we see more of this full story of who Cathy was. Having read Steinbecks journals so many times, I believe even he sat in the mystery, the question of who Cathy was. For me, getting to walk in her shoes and dresses, she was a chance to center my own power and simply not apologize. The best that art has to give us, is to pull us out of our own sorrow and bitterness or small worlds and see the world anew. That’s what Cathy was for me.
