A climber told me their doctor said they weren’t “built for climbing” because of their positive ulnar variance.

Here’s why that messaging is not only outdated…it’s harmful.

👉🏽 Beliefs matter.

What we’re told about our bodies can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

If someone convinces you that your wrist anatomy is “wrong,” you might start to feel pain, even when nothing’s actually damaged.

✅ Positive ulnar variance is common in people with and without pain

✅ Anatomy isn’t destiny. Bodies adapt.

✅ Pain is complex and influenced by more than structure (it includes stress, sleep, training load, and beliefs)

Now, is it possible that her anatomy played a role in her wrist pain? Sure. It could be one factor among many.

The dose makes the poison.

Sometimes a combination of anatomy, training load, and recovery capacity contributes to symptoms.

But it’s also very possible her anatomy has nothing to do with it.
Misdiagnoses happen. What’s labeled as a TFCC issue could be a tendon or even a load management issue.

Without a full history and exam, we just can’t be certain and in rehab, there’s always a degree of uncertainty.

So yes, her anatomy might play a role but it’s only one piece of a much bigger puzzle.

Don’t let structural explanations take away your power to adapt, recover, and keep climbing.

Don’t let an anatomical label decide what you’re capable of.

You’re allowed to pursue what you love and your body can rise to the occasion with smart training that’s appropriately dosed!

Heart and Soul Nebula

Once again I imaged this beautiful area of the night sky rich in Hydrogen emission. A spell of cold Arctic air led to a few rare clear nights in the midst of cloudy Seattle winter, giving me a chance to try out some new techniques.

This mini project comprises of 10 hours worth of data captured over 4 nights, of which over 8 hrs was through dual-band filters to mitigate the light polluted skies near Seattle. It was also my coldest session(s) yet with a high of -4C and low of -10C!

The final image comprises of a blend of synthetic HA and Oiii data, merged with RGB and true-colour stars. It’s incredible what a $300 camera lens can capture!

Swipe right to see the image process from raw subs to final image. The full field also includes the Double Cluster in Perseus. I hope you enjoy this image as much as I did learning from creating it.

Now, back to the regular cloudy rainy skies~
