🚆 Passenger rail to West Central Wisconsin is moving forward!

A proposed train route would connect St. Paul and Eau Claire, with stops planned in Stillwater, Hudson/River Falls, Baldwin, and Menomonie. The project is advancing through the federal funding process, with service planning next and a potential launch around 2029.

The proposed route could also strengthen connections between the Twin Cities and future rail service to Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago – expanding travel options across the entire Upper Midwest.

The next steps will help determine station locations, schedules, ridership, infrastructure needs, and more. With local governments beginning to include funding in future budgets, public input matters as policymakers consider whether to move forward with the plan in 2027.

Consultants for the Big Sky North Coast program estimated completion of Corridor ID Step 1 in April or May 2025. This is the first of the seven Corridor ID routes affecting Wisconsin to estimate a Step 1 completion date. Abe Zumwalt of David Evans and Associates, Inc. presented the plan to accomplish Step 1 to the Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority Board meeting at their Sept 7, 2024 meeting. The length of the corridor, over 2000 miles long, has a large number of stakeholders and requires outreach and coordination across six states.

Three different firms will each work on outreach and coordination of two states. An Intergovernmental Consultation Council has already begun to coordinate input from stakeholders. The Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority Board already includes ex officio members from counties, tribes, and host railroads, and Zumwalt noted that the Board’s prior outreach to stakeholders has sped up the remaining work on Step 1. #linkinbio

From the @missoulacurrent - Dave Strohmaier, chair of the Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority and a @missoulacountymt commissioner, said the meeting will detail plans for the Northwest rail region, including restoration of the North Coast Hiawatha, discontinued in the 1970s.

“This will be a capstone event,” Strohmaier said. “They would not be holding an event in Missoula unless they're committed to restoring this route.” The Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority formed two years ago to advocate for restoring passenger rail service across Montana's populated southern tier. While many saw success as a long shot, the authority has notched a number of achievements over the past year. #linkinbio👆 #traintravel #amtrak #passengertrain #railway #railpassengers #bigskycountry #bigskypassengerrail
