The word sadaqah comes from the same root as truth. And your smile, according to Yasmin Elhady, is the truth of yourself expressed outward.

@WGNetwork sits down with @YasminElhahaHady, attorney, comedian, and co-host of @Hulu’s Muslim Matchmaker, as she unpacks something hiding in plain sight in the Arabic language. The trilateral root of sadaqah, sadaq, means truth. It is the same root that gives the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the title As-Saddiq, the truthful one. And remarkably, the same root exists in Hebrew and Aramaic with the same meaning. Truth cuts through everything. It always has.

So when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told us that a smile is sadaqah, he was connecting the act of smiling to truth itself. Your smile is an expression of what is real in you. An outward reflection of the goodness that lives inside.

And then the neuroscience catches up with what Islam already knew. Smiling floods the brain with endorphins. Even when you do not feel happy, the physical act of smiling begins to produce the feeling of happiness. You are not faking it. You are activating something real.

And it does not stop with you. When you smile at someone, it releases endorphins in them too. It softens them. It creates a moment of genuine connection that costs nothing and gives everything.

One smile. An act of truth. An act of charity. A chain reaction of goodness that starts with you.

When did you last give someone a smile that you genuinely meant?

They know when they leave their house they are not guaranteed to come back. They go anyway.

Waleed Gabr (@WGNetwork), co-founder of Muslimi, entrepreneur, and humanitarian leader, speaks about what it actually means to do this work with a directness that leaves no room for comfortable distance. The team has been setting up projects and tents in Al-Fashir, one of the most dangerous active conflict zones in the world right now. When asked whether it is safe for their partners on the ground, the answer is honest. There is nothing safe in war zones. But somebody has to do the job.

That somebody is not an abstraction. It is people who made a decision rooted in something deeper than risk assessment. This is Allah's work. And Allah gave every person a God-given talent to carry out responsibilities on behalf of the ummah. For those on the ground in Al-Fashir, that talent and that responsibility brought them there.

When you trust Muslimi with your donation, Waleed is clear about what that trust means in practice. They go out and find the best people. They find the collaborators. They make sure the work gets done and gets done right. Not from behind a desk. In the field. In the places where the need is greatest and the conditions are hardest.

The people on the other end of your sadaqah are being reached by people who left home not knowing if they would return.

Does knowing that change how you think about where your donation goes?
