Why You Should Generously Tip Your Guide

"This year, I’m heading into my ninth season of guiding big-game hunts, and when it comes to tipping, I’ve seen it all.

When you book a guided hunt, it’s easy to see your guide as someone who simply shows up to help you chase a dream. And to a certain extent, they are chasing that dream right alongside you. But your guide has a life outside of hunting season, too.

They are literally losing sleep for you. They are putting long, rigorous miles on their bodies for you. They are stepping away from their families, friends, fur babies, careers, and even their own hunting seasons to help make yours successful. They are providing a service that can put their own safety at risk, and often, they are going far beyond what you ever see.

I can almost guarantee that a good guide wants you to succeed in the mountains just as badly—if not more—than you want to punch that tag.

Long before you ever arrive at camp, your guide has invested their own hard-earned money into gear, credentials, training, and countless hours scouting and studying the country to become better at what they do. They don’t just show up with some magic pill that tells them where the biggest bull on the mountain is."

We wanna know, which release are you shooting?

Sometimes to see improvements in your groups can be as simple as changing your release. Or it can even be adjusting your form. If you’re feeling a bit stuck and frustrated with your shooting, come see us and we can set up a 1-1 lesson to help you get through those barriers.

Pre season prep! Getting my pack dialed and getting in some miles to gauge my physical and mental toughness and sort out any pack / gear issues I may be having. For example: I bought these lightweight north face pants from the thrift store and want to make sure they perform before I take wear them on a 7 day back country hunt.

How are you preparing for the season? Leave your answer in the comments below.

Ashleigh, Alex, and Draya sit down to discuss the profound and life-changing experiences that shaped Ashleigh’s journey through Elk Clinic and her 2025 elk season.

From arriving at Elk Clinic with no elk hunting experience to filling her tag on opening day of Montana’s rifle season, Ashleigh shares the challenges, lessons, growth, and confidence she gained along the way.

For the full story tune in on the Venery YouTube channel and when you’re done listening, leave your thoughts or any questions in the comments section. We always love hearing from you.

A special thank you to @whatsyourwildcreative for recording and producing this conversation.

We hope Ashleigh’s story inspires someone to take the leap—whether that’s signing up for Elk Clinic, applying for a hunt, or saying yes to an opportunity that feels just outside their comfort zone.

As Ashleigh shares in the episode, “The box is comfortable.”

But growth rarely happens inside the box. When we step beyond certainty and embrace the unknown, we open ourselves up to experiences that can change the trajectory of our lives in ways we never imagined.

Fitness related non-fitness Friday this week...At RP we usually warn against cryotherapy / cold plunge / cold water immersion because it can have some muting effect on hypertrophy/adaptation.

The thing is, adaptation is not always the most important goal! Sometimes the need to perform now trumps the need to improve.

If you are an athlete about to compete, or like me, had already hiked 50 miles up mountains and had more to go–you need recovery and inflammation reduction more than you need adaptation.

40 F dip in the snowmelt river -- the lowest cost cryo I have ever done, and with the best view.

A plane dropped us in the wilderness for a week. These are a few things that sound magical when living out of your backpack in the backcountry.
