What it’s really about. MEAT! Both Jesse’s and my bull lived a free range life up in the mountains. Their deaths were quick and painless. Our knives cut away the meat from their bones and our eyes saw every step of the process from the field to the table. Clean. Organic. Straight from the source. We talked a lot this season about the emotions we experience when we take a life of a wild animal.Primal. Sadness. Ending something so we could continue to live. Gratitude and respect. If we don’t buy meat from the store this year, we will be okay, we will make it, and I’d rather it be that way. We have a few more tags we hope to fill and are looking forward to sharing this precious meat with people we love, and those who help us with Remi throughout the season.

Adam and I had a week in the mountains that we will never forget. When we didn’t find the elk we moved locations and spent some time glassing. Locating a mature bull we used the wind to our advantage and had some close encounters, and on day five took a shot (that unfortunately hit low) on a massive 6x6. Our tactics were simple: locate the elk, hike the mountain to get into position, locate the bull with a location bugle &/or soft cow calls, then move in silent for the kill. The conversations that filled the down time were healing, inspiring and motivating. The determination to get in close to the elk was unwavering. This was Adam’s first archery hunt and with three close calls & a shot at the herd bull in five days / is as good as it gets on public land. I am proud of you Adam for the grit and mindset that this is indeed a learning experience. Our friendship is rooted in the memories these mountains hold and I’m looking forward to our next hunt together.

Sounds Between the Bugles

Early days of archery season are spent listening for sounds of elk, and while you’re listening you hear so much more.
You hear the wind coming in from afar, the branches breaking and the trees creaking.
You hear birds singing and squirrels relentlessly churring.
You hear the sound of an owl sailing through the timber and a lone wolf howling as the glow of the morning sky is one you’ll always remember.
You hear the sound of a plane traveling across the sky and you hear your stomach rumble letting you know it’s lunch time.
You hear the rain softly fall around you and sticks breaking in the thick forest that surrounds you.
You listen some more and off in the distance you hear it, a faint bugle.
You hear your breath as you climb the mountain to close the distance.
You hear the cow call, sweet and enticing.
You hear him coming closer, his bugle piercing through the pines at daylight. You hear your heart beating loud in your chest, and the blood pulsing in your ears.
You hope you hear your shot fire and make impact so then others can hear the story of how you stopped, were present and listened.
But this is hunting, not killing, they say, and when you tell the tales of your hunt in Montana it’s the little things that made the entire experience worth sharing.
