Get creative and join in this week on Karangahape with ‘Small World’ at Studio One Toi Tu - an interactive digital installation by Pon Huey Min, Peter Simpson and Melody Renaud that invites audiences to draw their own bugs and release them into an evolving ecosystem. This work celebrates creativity and quiet observation. By participating and viewing these digital creations, the audience is invited to slow down, reflect, and find empathy for the small lives that sustain our world.

On Saturday join Tautai for a workshop with Faamele Etuale using the art of felt lei making to reflect on the people, relationships, stories and communities that have shaped Tautai over the past four decades. This is a free public workshop as part of the K I V A | 40 years of Tautai exhibition. Shared kai will be an important part of coming together, so please bring a plate to contribute to the table. Spaces are limited and registration is required.

You can also get along to new photographic exhibitions this week with Coastal Signs opening ‘sisters’ by Shannon Te Ao on Wednesday night and Charles Ninow opening an exhibition of photography by Gil Hanly on Friday night.

In arts media this week, listen back to Chris Booth korero with Sofia Roger Williams on 95bFM’s ‘Various Artists’ where they discuss his work in the exhibition ‘one of these situations’ at Lett Thomas.

And, pick up your copy of the latest Current magazine featuring many of the Karangahape galleries and the artists we work with including Nephi Tupaea on the cover whose work is currently showing at Tim Melville, as well as Atarangi Anderson with Artspace Aotearoa, Erica van Zon with Melanie Roger Gallery and much much more.

Please check directly with each gallery for opening hours and exhibition details, as these may vary.

It’s a busy week in Auckland’s art scene, with First Thursdays bringing the opening of three new exhibitions on Karangahape Road. At Moat Gallery, Central Façade features Elise McDermott, Jasmin Kirkwood and Dan Arps; at MSJD Gallery, Elsie ‘Christoffel, and Susu present smash, smash, smash, smash; and at Haumi e Studios, Sola Fide features Armani Reynolds-Hatem and Estefana Correa.

Artspace Aotearoa has two events this week. On Wednesday, Atarangi Anderson leads a Deep-Dive lecture exploring her practice, research, the intergenerational transmission of knowledge through aute, and the revitalisation of Māori barkcloth practices. On Thursday evening, as part of First Thursdays, artist Keciano presents works-in-progress for Artspace’s latest Crit Session.

Studio One Toi Tū also opens its new season with three exhibitions on Wednesday evening.
Elsewhere, Disco Bits and Balls opens at Which Way, featuring Yuji Iwase, Warisara Thomson and Nikita Hesketh, while one of these situations at Lett Thomas brings together work by Diane Arbus, Chris Booth, Mike Hewson and Kate Newby. MAY also welcomes William Austin to Pitt Street, with work by Hariata Ropata-Tangahoe, Anna Sisson and Sue Soo. William Austin is a commercial gallery based in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, representing an intergenerational mix of early-career and established artists.
It’s also the final week to catch Vertices at Coastal Signs and Cosmic Punchline at Rm, both closing Saturday.

Check directly with each gallery for opening hours and exhibition details, as these may vary.
