The older I get, the less impressed I am by a business that only works if you’re working all the time. I want the work to be good, the clients to be right, and the business to make money...obviously. I had a client this year not pay a $1,200 invoice because they said it was too expensive... yes, after 12 years in business, that can still happen. :) Old me would’ve immediately wondered if I charged too much. New me was mostly just annoyed that someone had the audacity to not pay for a service that was already delivered haha. But once I got over my *very* human reaction, I realized I never questioned the number itself. I knew exactly where it came from. It wasn’t based on what someone else was charging, or what I thought the client might say yes to. It was based on what the project needed to cost to be profitable. I used to think the fear would go away once I got “good enough” to charge more...spoiler: It didn’t. :) I felt nervous at $1,500, nervous at $3K, nervous at $5K, and still had moments of panic even when I was sending *much* bigger proposals. The thing that finally made pricing feel less personal was understanding the math behind it. Once I knew the number wasn’t just something I made up, it became a lotttt easier to send the proposal without immediately trying to talk myself out of it first. I really did think for the longestttt time that if I could just get more clients, everything else in my business would kind of fall into place. So I put SO much energy into marketing and posting and trying to get in front of better clients…when really, I was starting with step three. I think a lot of designers are doing the exact same thing. There’s a reason I teach profit first, then position, then pipeline, and then people. If the first two pieces aren’t working, adding more clients into the mix usually doesn’t fix nearly as much as we think it will. I’ve been keeping a little secret since June!!! 👀 I started @byjennajohnson because I wanted a space that could be fully for designers. White & Salt has always had two different conversations happening at once: the client-facing side of the studio, and the business-building side that soooo many of you have been here for over the years. At some point, it started feeling like both deserved more room. 🤍 Soooo this new account is where I’m going to talk about the stuff that feels really specific to us as designers: pricing, clients, running an agency, figuring out the business side, what I’ve learned, what I’m still learning, and honestly all the messy in-between parts. I kept it quiet for a few months because I needed some space to figure out what I actually wanted this to be before I announced it. Which means there’s already a bunch of content waiting for you over there. Some polished, some not so polished lol. AND I have something REALLY exciting coming for designers next!!! “Feminine” as a design descriptor can be laced with stories, influences, and cultural factors we grew up with. Case in point: I always liked when people described my type as feminine, but also felt a tiny insecure twinge of “what does that mean though?” in the back of my mind. Is it too dainty? Delicate? Soft? Silly, right? Because, yes, while my type can absolutely feel (proudly!) delicate and soft, it’s also strong. “Feminine” is kickass. Feminine is evolving, perceptive, detailed, embracing. Honestly, “feminine” (to me) is whatever makes you feel held, pure, whole, safe, accepted. No weakness or negative connotation there. It’s gorgeous. And this is what I’m making of it at the moment, proudly putting that “feminine perspective” on my design because damn does the world need more of that. More beauty, empathy, grace, weight, consideration. And if I can bring that to the world in the form of letters, I’m honored. And I’m so lucky to be a part of the beauty you create with these feminine typefaces 🤍 (And to be clear, I’m talking about the word “feminine” as a descriptor often used in design, not about specific gender roles/traits as humans - although I think challenging those stereotypes can be really productive as well 🤍)
