The Zamfara State Government has reaffirmed the importance of environmental hygiene, healthcare and polio immunisation, noting that both the Holy Qur'an and the Bible emphasise the need to maintain cleanliness and protect human health. The government also highlighted the importance of the annual World Polio Day, observed on 24 October.

The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Mahmud Muhammad Dantawasa Bukkuyum, stated this during the 2026 World Polio Day celebration in Gusau, the state capital.

The event featured a march from the Gusau Emir's Palace to Dr. Karima Primary Healthcare Centre, with representatives of Rotary International, the Zamfara State Primary Healthcare Board, persons with disabilities and other relevant stakeholders in attendance.

The Commissioner, who was represented by the redeployed Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Muhammad Salihu Anka, stated that the Ministry of Information and Culture has various communication channels capable of reaching communities across the state. These include radio stations, print media and social media platforms.

He further explained that the Ministry had dedicated one hour each week to awareness and sensitization campaigns on UNICEF-supported programme areas.

He urged relevant stakeholders to utilise the available media platforms and scheduled airtime to promote polio immunisation and encourage parents and caregivers to ensure that their children receive the required vaccines.
He emphasised that religious leaders had pledged to identify and share relevant passages from the Holy Qur'an and the Bible that encourage cleanliness, environmental hygiene and the protection of human health during their weekly sermons.

The Commissioner added that health education is essential and should be embraced by everyone. He noted that regular sensitization and public awareness campaigns by the Ministry had contributed to improved public compliance with he

POLIO CAN SPREAD EVEN WHEN THERE ARE NO SYMPTOMS

A child can look perfectly healthy and still be at risk. Polio can cause permanent paralysis, but vaccination offers powerful protection.

This World Polio Day, check your child's vaccination status, visit your nearest primary health centre, and share this message with a parent.

Let's protect every child! ❤️🌍

Preparedness Is Our First Line of Defence Against Ebola

Yesterday, I met with Medical Directors across our 14 FCT public hospitals and key health officials to reinforce our readiness against Ebola Virus Disease.
Key Actions Underway:
Hospital Readiness: Strengthening early detection, screening, isolation protocols, and proper PPE use with support from the @ncdcgov
Staff Safety: Ensuring all clinical and non-clinical staff are trained on symptoms and reporting protocols.
Safe Burials: If Ebola is suspected, deceased bodies must not be touched, washed, or prepared. Contact specialized response teams immediately.
To All FCT Residents:
Remain calm, practise regular hand hygiene, avoid contact with bodily fluids, and report suspected cases promptly to health authorities.
Preparedness saves lives. Let us stand vigilant and protect our community together

Gombe State made important progress in 2025 by releasing childbirth-spacing funds for the first time after two years of zero releases. This helped improve access to the methods women need to safely space their pregnancies.

As funding stalls in 2026, the progress made could be at risk, leaving women struggling to access these methods.

As a healthcare provider in Tumfure, Aishatu has seen more women coming to her facility for childbirth-spacing services. With consistent funding, an additional 28,000 women could be reached by 2028.

Gombe has taken a step towards supporting women’s choices. Consistent funding will help that support last.

As Nigeria intensifies its response to the single confirmed case of Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD), NCDC, DRASA Trust, CICaPS and partners convened trained Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) professionals at an alumni assembly themed “500+ IPC Alumni: One Network, Many Actions!”

The assembly was a call to action, mobilising IPC alumni across Nigeria to strengthen infection prevention practices in healthcare facilities, sensitise and support frontline healthcare workers, and promote early identification and reporting of suspected cases.

With Nigeria currently reporting one confirmed case, these coordinated actions are particularly important. By strengthening IPC practices across healthcare facilities and communities, the alumni network will help establish an IPC ring of protection, reducing opportunities for transmission and supporting efforts to contain the outbreak and prevent this single case from leading to further infections.

This initiative demonstrates the lasting value of investing in a skilled health security workforce. Professionals trained over the years are now being mobilised to put their knowledge and experience into practice when the country needs them most.

It also highlights the power of collaboration. Working alongside IPC professionals, trained health media fellows will help amplify their actions, raise public awareness, counter misinformation and mobilise Nigerians to adopt behaviours that prevent infection.

One trained workforce. One connected network. Many coordinated actions to protect Nigerians.
