Health diplomacy matters more than ever as the global health landscape continues to evolve.

Today, WHO Nigeria convened the Health Diplomacy Dialogue with ambassadors and diplomatic representatives, creating a platform for strategic exchange on developments shaping health in Nigeria, across Africa, and globally.

The dialogue provided updates on the evolving global health architecture, the Accra Reset, regional health priorities, and wider changes in the global health ecosystem, including the increasing emphasis on country leadership, national ownership, and more effective international cooperation.

We also discussed developments in Nigeria, including the health security and humanitarian landscape, ongoing outbreaks and preparedness efforts, and the implications of a changing financing environment for resilient, nationally led health systems. These themes are central to WHO Nigeria's current health security agenda.

Looking ahead, we highlighted Nigeria's hosting of the 5th High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance, taking place from 6 to 8 December 2026 in Abuja. This will be an important opportunity to advance One Health action and move from global commitments to implementation, financing, and accountability.

Diplomatic missions are critical partners in this dialogue. Whether or not they have dedicated health or development cooperation teams, their engagement with capitals and broader diplomatic networks can help connect country priorities with regional and global decision-making processes.

As WHO Representative @DrPavelUrsu emphasised:
"Health diplomacy is not only about sharing information. It is about connecting national priorities with regional and global processes and using our collective voice to turn dialogue into action and impact."

WHO will continue to use the Health Diplomacy Dialogue as a platform for timely, transparent, and strategic engagement with the diplomatic community as the global health landscape evolves.

To strengthen the Zamfara State Government’s response to cholera and other disease outbreaks, @WHONigeria has provided essential medicines and medical commodities to the State Ministry of Health.
The support comes as health authorities continue efforts to prevent, detect and respond to cholera and other vaccine-preventable diseases across the state.
As of 27 September, Zamfara State had reported 202 suspected cholera cases and five deaths across two LGAs, underscoring the need to sustain preparedness, early detection and timely access to treatment.
The commodities provided include oral rehydration salts (ORS), Ringer’s lactate and other intravenous fluids, antibiotics, personal protective equipment (PPE), four Interagency Emergency Health Kits (IEHKs), cholera investigation modules and cholera community modules. The supplies will support case investigation and management, infection prevention and control, and the establishment of oral rehydration points for early treatment in affected communities. They will also strengthen the state’s preparedness and response to cholera and other disease outbreaks.
WHO State Coordinator, Dr Raji Mukhtar, handed over the supplies to the Commissioner for Health, Dr Nafisa Muhammad Maradun, in Gusau.
Receiving the supplies, Dr Maradun thanked WHO for the continued support and assured that the supplies would be deployed to areas where they are most needed to support the state’s outbreak response.
@WHO remains committed to supporting the Zamfara State Government to strengthen preparedness, surveillance and timely response to disease outbreaks and ensure communities at risk have access to lifesaving interventions.
Cholera is preventable and treatable. Early treatment saves lives. People experiencing acute watery diarrhoea and vomiting should seek care immediately, while communities are encouraged to use safe water, practise good hygiene and maintain proper sanitation. by @whonigeria

Early detection and timely care of diseases, saves lives and helps to stop outbreaks.
To strengthen preparedness and response to cholera, the Zamfara State Ministry of Health, with support from WHO Nigeria, trained 243 clinicians across all 14 Local Government Areas (LGAs) on cholera surveillance, case detection and management, infection prevention and control, and timely referral of suspected cases.
The capacity-building workshop in Gusau brought together health personnel from 147 Primary Health Centres, 25 General Hospitals, and 2 tertiary health facilities across 147 wards.
Key areas covered:
🔹 Early identification, management, and reporting of cholera, diphtheria, and vaccine-preventable diseases
🔹 Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) to protect health workers and patients
🔹 Standard case definitions, treatment protocols, and rapid referral pathways
🔹 Strengthening Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) surveillance
As of 27 September, Zamfara has recorded 202 suspected cholera cases with 5 deaths and 863 suspected diphtheria cases with 59 deaths.
Clinicians are the first line of defense, strengthening their capacity helps ensure suspected cases are recognised early, reported promptly and appropriately managed, while enabling surveillance teams to investigate and respond quickly.
Through continued collaboration with the Zamfara State Government and partners, WHO is supporting efforts to strengthen disease surveillance, improve outbreak readiness and equip frontline health workers with the skills needed to protect communities from public health threats.

Nigeria is working to build a health‑financing research system that is nationally owned, sustainably financed and responsive to its priorities.

This matters because strong evidence helps leaders make decisions that protect families and advance universal health coverage.

At the panel on “Financing Research Sovereignty,” stakeholders agreed Nigeria must define and sustain its own research agenda, while partners support innovation, capacity strengthening and peer learning.
Key points:
1. Stronger domestic financing for priority research.
2. Research embedded in government systems and budgets.
3. Local capacity across the evidence‑to‑policy‑to‑impact chain.
4. Partnerships aligned with national priorities.
5. Leadership that frames research questions to solve critical problems.

Dr Rasanathan: “We can tax harmful substances. It reduces consumption and raises revenue.”

Dr Ohiri: “Health reform requires coordinated leadership across sectors.”

@DrPavelUrsu: “Evidence is only the departure point. Action requires understanding local realities.”
Support evidence‑informed reforms that strengthen financial protection for all.

No family should have to choose between getting care and meeting basic needs. Yet Nigerians still pay about 72% of health costs out of pocket.

High out‑of‑pocket spending pushes people into poverty, especially women, children and low‑income households. Nigeria needs stronger financial protection to advance universal health coverage.

WHO is supporting Nigeria to close evidence gaps and strengthen the link between research and policy so decisions protect people. @DrPavelUrsu: “Good health‑financing policy depends on good evidence.”

At the Nigeria Health Financing Research and Learning Forum, partners identified priority research areas, better data systems and sex‑disaggregated insights to guide reforms.

Stay informed and support evidence‑based reforms that leave no one behind.
