Video snippet from To Be a Drop in the Sea / شو في هالبحر؟, presented at Wide Open on April 30.

A few years ago, I spent a summer on Nisiros, a beautiful Greek island close to Turkey. In my late twenties, I finally taught myself how to swim. For the first time, I learned to float and to trust the sea. At the time, I was navigating many conflicts with my family and (still) questioning what home meant to me. Out there in the water, I realized that swimming is simply just surrendering to the sea. The more you fight it out of panic, the harsher it becomes. It pulls you back and forth until you can no longer resist. I recognized something similar in the struggle for unconditional acceptance within certain relationships.

In this performance, I explore the sea as a powerful and symbolic body. Moving between fear, surrender, survival, and hope, I reflect on the Mediterranean as both a space of exchange and a border shaped by political violence and the current climate in Europe, a sea that gives life and takes it away.

30.04.26 Performing “THEY 無也 ” at @berlinerringtheater for Walpurgisnacht by @wideopen.berlin My heart is full🤍

Inspired by the painted faces of Chinese traditional opera, this performance unfolds as an act of inscription, resistance, and becoming.

Inspired by the painted faces of Chinese traditional opera, this performance becomes a ritual of inscription and queer self-claiming.

With a small brush, I write:

“They say I am neither male nor female.
They say I cannot live under the sun.
But I was born this way — am I wrong?”

Then, with a broad brush soaked in red ink, I write: “they無也.”

Between whisper and rupture, wound and declaration, the work confronts the violence of being named by others. Through ink, body, and gesture, it asks what it means for a queer body to step into visibility — and to exist, unapologetically, under the sun.

Performing “Figlə d’ ’a Tempesta” at @berlinerringtheater for Walpurgisnacht by @wideopen.berlin . What an amazing night! 🖤

Music by the amazing @majd.o.len ❤️🔥🫶

“The performance is inspired by tarantism, a South Italian ritual often associated with those considered excessive, queer, unruly or non-normative bodies that did not fit in society. Said to be bitten by a spider, they entered trance through music and movement to release what could not be spoken, with the aim of being restored. Here, that logic remains, but without the idea of needing a cure.

A paper mask, drawn from the traditions of Puglia, is not used to hide: it reveals what cannot be held in a single face, refusing a fixed identity.

The body enters a dark ritual without language, vibrating between genders, between histories, between the sacred and the profane.

This is not healing. This is transformation.”

Inspired by the one and only @laninadelsud 🖤
