Video snippet from To Be a Drop in the Sea / شو في هالبحر؟, presented at Wide Open on April 30. A few years ago, I spent a summer on Nisiros, a beautiful Greek island close to Turkey. In my late twenties, I finally taught myself how to swim. For the first time, I learned to float and to trust the sea. At the time, I was navigating many conflicts with my family and (still) questioning what home meant to me. Out there in the water, I realized that swimming is simply just surrendering to the sea. The more you fight it out of panic, the harsher it becomes. It pulls you back and forth until you can no longer resist. I recognized something similar in the struggle for unconditional acceptance within certain relationships. In this performance, I explore the sea as a powerful and symbolic body. Moving between fear, surrender, survival, and hope, I reflect on the Mediterranean as both a space of exchange and a border shaped by political violence and the current climate in Europe, a sea that gives life and takes it away. Free entry! @wideopen.berlin Wide Open's Walpurgisnacht brings a queer ritual performance to Berliner Ringtheater for @neuezukunftstralau Hausfest. Find the whole Hausfest program on our profile. *** Jiannyuh Wang commands the bonfire with a slow, hypnotic fusion of traditional Chinese calligraphy and contemporary choreography. Armed with a giant brush, red ink and an oversized roll of paper, they merge the act of writing with ecstatic movement, flowing to the pulse of the music. Calligraphy, already a dance of the hand, expands into a full-body and visceral ritual. The ink runs. The paper tears. Moving through the crowd with a bucket of viscous substance, the duo launches into a paradoxical cleansing ritual that blurs the line between purification and contamination, desire and disgust. Free entry! @wideopen.berlin Wide Open's Walpurgisnacht brings a queer ritual performance to Berliner Ringtheater for @neuezukunftstralau Hausfest. Find the whole Hausfest program on our profile. *** Iacopo Loliva, contemporary dancer and choreographer, enters the fire with a performance inspired by tarantism, a South Italian ritual often associated with bodies deemed excessive, queer or unruly. In the original rite, outcasts were allowed to dance and let loose only when pretending to be bitten by a spider, entering a trance in which everything was permitted. Only through this total trance could they be restored from their “madness’’.
