Not So Fast 📽 by @wild__fleur The porcupine fish, also known as a pufferfish or a blowfish, is a type of marine animal known for its ability to inflate itself into a ball shape as a defense mechanism against predators. When threatened, porcupine fish fill their highly elastic stomachs with water (or air if they are out of the water) to increase their size and display their long, sharp spines. This makes them less palatable and more difficult for predators to swallow. Porcupine fish have strong jaws and sharp, beak-like teeth that allow them to crush the hard shells of marine snacks like crabs, shrimp, snails, clams, sea urchins and starfish being their favorites. Many species of porcupine fish contain tetrodotoxin, a potent toxin that makes them poisonous to most predators, including humans. This toxin is especially concentrated in their internal organs and skin. Teacher Candide Krieger has turned Edukits Hawai‘i into a powerful teaching resource at economically disadvantaged Title I schools across Hawai‘i. ⁠ ⁠ The nonprofit creates hands-on kits for teaching fourth-grade STEAM subjects in a way that resonates with local students. So far, about 1,400 kits have been distributed to 30 schools. ⁠ ⁠ She developed the idea as a UH Mānoa graduate student in education and won funding from the UH Venture Competition. Krieger now teaches at Jefferson Elementary, where she sees her concept play out in real life. ⁠ ⁠ Candide Krieger was selected as Student Entrepreneur of the Year in the 2025 Hawaii Entrepreneur Awards.
