Meet the ʻiwa (Great Frigatebird) one of Hawaiʻi’s most incredible seabirds

For generations, people in Hawaiʻi have paid attention to the behavior of ʻiwa as one of the signs of changing weather. When these birds that normally spend much of their time soaring over the ocean are seen coming closer to shore or inland, stormy weather may be approaching. 🌧️🌊

And that’s not the only incredible thing about them…

🪽 Their wingspan can reach over 7 feet
☁️ They can soar for hours with very little effort
💦 Despite being seabirds, they avoid sitting on the ocean
🎈 Males inflate a huge red throat pouch to attract females
🏴‍☠️ They chase other seabirds and steal their food in midair!

In fact, the name ʻiwa is associated with “thief” — fitting for Hawaiʻi’s little sky pirate. 🏴‍☠️😂
