Keeping you up to speed with what's happening at RARE India.

We're delighted to announce that Both Snow Leopard Lodge Uley and the new Mangyu Lodge join the RARE Collection which means there is now the option for year round options, not just for those hardy wildlifers, who brave the depths of the Ladakhi winter seeking the elusive but oh so beautiful snow leopard.

This is India's most remote and, quite frankly, spectacular region. The flagship Ulley lodge, operational since 2016, sits in the remote hamlet north of the Indus River, while Mangyu (opening spring 2026) perches dramatically at the intersection of valleys in this historic village.

Now, as well as winters, guests can enjoy spring's sensational wildflowers, cycle trails and treks all amidst some of the most spectacular views on the planet and with the opportunity to spot Ladakh's unique wildlife.

Ulley's 10 centrally heated rooms feature thoughtful touches like heat pumps, charging stations, and window seats, while the upcoming Mangyu Lodge will offer 6 rooms in a striking new building with passive solar design and panoramic valley views through large picture windows.

Both locations provide perfect bases for wildlife viewing, cultural exploration, and discovering the intersection of conservation and community tourism in the high Himalayas.

What are you waiting for?

RARE Hotels, where each property tells its own story of India's wild places and hidden corners, welcomes new hotels that deepen their commitment to authentic, conservation-focused hospitality.

The forest beckons.……….

The latest addition is KAAV, meaning 'sacred forest' in Malayalam. This eco lodge sits on four tree-laden acres where every inch belongs to the forest— claimed by leaf litter, termite mounds, and wildlife tracks.

Indeed, the moment you pass through KAAV's entrance—a wide circle woven from dried lantana stems—you know you've entered a space where the forest reigns supreme. Here, the wild reveals its secret lives to those who pause, listen, and look long enough.

This boutique, wild stay is home to countless small mammals, birds, and reptiles, offers intimate encounters through the lodge's 'Tiny Safari' with resident naturalists, while larger adventures unfold via jungle safaris and river excursions through Kabini's forests and backwaters.

Stay in elevated first-floor rooms with private viewing decks, or choose the stilted glamping tents for something that feels a little more wild. The private pool villa, tucked along a forest path, is also a wonderful recent addition.

Open-air dining under dense canopies serves excellent regional cuisine alongside continental favourites, while the main deck overlooks Kabini's prime safari zones—where you might drift off to alarm calls and wake to herds of grazing deer.

In Nagarhole National Park's biodiversity haven, @kaavsafarilodge stands as a true extension of the Western Ghats forest, offering the perfect base to explore these magnificent jungles.

Huge congratulations to the 16 female mountaineers who reached Tirich Mir Advanced Base Camp this week. The outdoors is for everyone, and we are always delighted to see women leading the way in adventure tourism.

Tirich Mir (7,708m) is the highest mountain in the Hindu Kush. The Government of Pakistan has declared 2025-26 the Year of Tirich Mir in a bid to boost tourism and promote interest in mountaineering. Considering a visit to @kptourism? There’s never been a better time!

How you see her, now you don’t 😂

@artynumpty is already gorgeous, but looked absolutely incredible dressed up in this traditional costume from Surkhandarya. Thank you to @dimas.sarmangan of @ethnostyle_surkhan for letting us try on your fabulous outfits in Jarkurgan. It was a real privilege to learn from you about the textiles traditions of southern Uzbekistan.

When you visit Uzbekistan, make sure you go beyond the main @unesco World Heritage Sites. The country’s cultural heritage is as varied as it is rich, and regions like Surkhandarya have traditions, foods, and styles that you won’t find anywhere else.

Happy birthday, Pakistan! 🇵🇰

14 August is Pakistan’s #IndependenceDay. We had the great pleasure of visiting Sindh, Punjab, and Islamabad with @wildfrontiers on their remarkable Southern Pakistan: Journey through the Indus Valley tour last November, then continuing on to Peshawar with @xperiencepakistan. It’s a country with so much to offer, including extraordinarily rich history and stunning landscapes.

Another favorite way to discover the beauty of Murchison falls National Park is by cruising by boat from the Paraa jetty to the bottom of the Murchison falls. Animals such as African bush elephants, Nile crocodiles, Uganda Kobs, Hippos, buffaloes and birds such as African fish eagles, kingfishers and African jacana are seen before the activity culminates into a photography session at the falls.

The rangers in the Lower Amudarya State Biosphere Reserve have a challenging but vital job to do, caring not only for the landscape and wildlife but also the historic sites within the protected area. If you’re travelling between Khiva and Nukus, it is well worth stopping at the reserve to see firsthand their fight against climate change, the hugely successful Bactrian deer breeeding programme, the tugai forest, and the birdlife of the Amu Darya (River Oxus).

If you’ve been to Samarkand, you’ll have seen the iconic tiger and deer mosaic which decorates the facade of the Sher Dor Madrassa, on the right hand side of the Registan. I’ve been told many times by guides that the deer symbolise students chasing after knowledge; and according to @archnet.akdc.aktc, “This zoomorphic motif violates orthodox Islamic conventions probably in an attempt to borrow political legitimacy from its use of a traditional Mongol motif.“

In Ladakh this week, I’ve been visiting many Buddhist monasteries, looking at the wall paintings, and hearing stories about the Buddha and his teachings. In Buddhism, the deer represents wisdom, because when the Buddha gave his first sermon at Sarnath, the deer joined his disciples to listen. Meanwhile the tiger — especially in Tibetan Buddhism — represents meditation, the taking of one’s inner darkness, and the transmutation of anger into wisdom and insight.

I have a hypothesis that the use of the deer and tiger motifs on the Sher Dor Madrassa may have been drawn from Buddhism, as this faith — along with Zoroastrianism — was prominent in Central Asia prior to the arrival of Islam. Many other pre-Islamic practices and ideas were incorporated into Sufism, so why not this one? This fits with Archnet’s comments about the Mongols, too, as Buddhism (which is still the dominant religion in Mongolia) spread there via Central Asia.
