It is with the greatest of sadness that we have had to say farewell to Mateo Mambe, who passed away this past weekend, after a long illness. Many of you will remember Mateo as the original Carer of Marimba, the pangolin.

Mateo described Marimba as his own child and treated her with the dedication, kindness and genuine affection that a parent will show their children. He has cared for Marimba for twenty two years.

He was originally from Mozambique and would often speak Portuguese with some of our guests. He had such a grand heart, an endless smile and has been a dedicated member of the Wild is Life Team for longer than I can remember.

He was truly a legend and will be profoundly missed, but never forgotten. Marimba, in particular, will miss his gentle stroking, riding on his shoulders, or wandering through the bushveld, searching for ants. Marimba’s scales have been worn down to be almost completely smooth now, from Mateo’s gentle handling.

A giant amongst men. Vale, dearest Mr Mateo. 💔
