This weekend we took a walk on the wild side with @wildmansteve and did some foraging in Central Park. It was amazing to learn how many edible fruits and plants grow in our city. Our favorite by far was #lambsquarters which tasted a lot like spinach and is exceptionally nutritious! We also collected quince and made a strawberry quince jam. It was a really great way to see a different side of the city.

We love to outfit like-minded folks doing cool things, so we are very excited to see @wildmansteve in his white ZAPWARE set! Steve and his daughter Violet teach the NYC public of all ages how to identify, sustainably harvest and prepare wild plants and mushrooms for food and home remedies. You can find out more about their work at wildmanstevebrill.com or check out @wildmansteve on Instagram! I have some basic foraging knowledge, but feel I’ve already learned a ton from his video work and can’t wait to go for an in-person walk. The second of these videos is from a recent walk Steve and Violet did with kids at @usdanarts recently that I wanted to share so that you can see the abundant knowledge they have to share (and to see Steve looking sick in his set obvi). NYC check em out!! Also, Steve is wearing one of his really dope foraging tees underneath his ZAPWARE that he sells on his site and I think I’m gonna need one of those soon #foraged #foragedfood #foraging #forest🌲 #forestwalk

Made a bouquet by foraging in Central Park

** legalities questionable **

Meet @wildmansteve who kept us safe while we tried things or steered clear of mushrooms like this one

Favorite lead texture. They actually had some weight to them.

Carter found the edible mushroom! 🪵👂🍄‍🟫

While tours with Wildman are able to sample small amounts, we can’t uproot or damage a plant, much leave enough behind, and focus on renewables.

Funny response from the woman who almost ate the uncooked, yet safe mushroom.

On a recent Saturday, the Facing the Future work group hosted a foraging tour of Prospect Park led by the renowned naturalist Wildman Steve Brill @wildmansteve. About 30 participants learned how to identify edible wild plants, including burdock and chickweed, while discovering the surprising abundance of food growing all around us. As a bonus, Juneberries were in season, and we got to enjoy a handful straight from the trees — a delicious highlight of the tour.
