Here is a story about mugwort! Watch part 1 to learn about the plant.

Mugwort is an extremely common and invasive medicinal herb that has been used for millennia for medicinal purposes. Mugwort is commonly used in brewing, hence the name “mug” and “wort” is an old word for plant. The smell is known to give people vivid dreams at night, and tea from the leaves is used to manage PMS symptoms, support digestion, along with a number of other traditional uses. In Korea, the shoots are used in tempura. Mugwort is a relative of ragweed, and it may lead to allergic reactions in those who are allergic to ragweed. The smell of the crushed leaves is a great identifying characteristic!

This weekend we took a walk on the wild side with @wildmansteve and did some foraging in Central Park. It was amazing to learn how many edible fruits and plants grow in our city. Our favorite by far was #lambsquarters which tasted a lot like spinach and is exceptionally nutritious! We also collected quince and made a strawberry quince jam. It was a really great way to see a different side of the city. taken in Central Park by @wildmansteve

Keep your eyes out for giant puffballs this fall! Don’t confuse them with their lookalikes (the soccer ball and plastic bag). Puffballs are wonderful in dips, spreads, fried, in casseroles, or almost any other dish. As with all mushrooms, these need to be cooked. Try only a few bites if this is your first time eating the species—anyone can have a bad reaction to a new food.

Learning about White Snakeroot! This poisonous plant is common throughout the eastern US, often growing in forests and shaded areas. It contains a toxic alcohol called tremetol, which is deadly. Although poisonous, the species is native and plays important roles in our ecosystem. It has quite the fascinating history, causing milk sickness among many settlers in the 19th century. This is a great plant to know as a forager in order to avoid picking it. We love to explore the history, folklore, and mythology of the plants we find on our walks.
