“Being a queer farmer in 2025 means navigating a constant balancing act—fighting to be taken seriously in a field that often dismisses flower farming as frivolous, while also carrying the weight of visibility in a time when simply existing as anything but a white man can feel like a confrontation.”

Kelly Brown of Do Right Flower Farm is farming two acres of flowers at the northwestern tip of Santa Cruz County, California, just upstream from the Pacific Ocean. What began as a bike messenger job in Santa Cruz led to weekends selling flowers at the farmers market, and soon @wildoneofwilder was captivated. Flowers reignited a love for plants nurtured since childhood and grew into a career built on endurance, creativity, and care. “Biking taught me how to do hard things with my body—how to pace myself, listen, and push without burning out. Farming feels the same way: it’s endurance work, learning to live on that edge without fear.”

Today, Kelly grows cut flowers for florists and events, a great excuse to indulge in growing unusual flowers and an opportunity to connect to a passionate community of florists and small-scale growers. Besides a deep love for flowers, @dorightflowerfarm was born with a desire to create a farm haven for other queer, trans and femme farmers to work hard outdoors without navigating the usual challenges of those workplace cultures.

After 3 wonderful seasons our dear Ben has decided to move on to the next adventure. They have been an integral part of the farm these past three season and we are going to miss them! Ben started with Do Right having no prior farm experience but a strong drive to learn. After a season getting their bearings we co-designed a managerial role for them to grow into. The past two seasons they managed the greenhouse, tracked most integrated pest management tasks and were a central part of the field and harvest team. They are funny, kind, hard working, creative, and so much more! Good luck on your next chapter Ben!! We love you!!

Photos from our farm party! We had a blast sharing this glorious place with old friends and new friends. Thanks to all who attended and we missed all who couldn’t make it! Thank you big time to @natashalozanoffphoto who you should definitely hire to photograph your weddings and other events. Also big thanks to the band, Combo Colocha for serenading us all (and the plants—they’re listening ;).

Preparing a feast for flower hungry guests. I had the opportunity and honor to work with Valentin from @four.calendar at @dorightflowerfarm a few months ago.

What a fun and soft time to be amongst friends, food, and flowers on such a special day for Kelly & Naomi. Did we skinny dip into the creek afterwards? You bet we did 💐 You don’t want to miss out on @four.calendar !

For some reason I like shots of filling up water bottles from wild/natural sources.

Been drinking from this spring for 20 years and it’s just fine.
