Stone Walls around a Glass House | @joshlarge_, BA (Hons) Fashion Photography, Class of 2024 Behind the image, in Josh’s words: “While researching, I came across an image of a salt harvester holding a large rake. The tool stretched across the frame, creating a strong horizontal line that both divided and united the image. Inspired by August Sander’s People of the 20th Century, I wanted to create a shepherd character and bring honesty to the way Sander documented people, inviting introspection and contemplation. Rhys Frampton’s Drowning Lights exhibition also made me think about Greek mythology, and how the male form has been idealised throughout history as gods, ideals and archetypes of power, beauty and divinity. We began in a field. I briefed Will on wanting the prop to feel like a tool and a toy at once. Holding it by his side created a composition of strength with leading lines, and the contrast I wanted to push in post production for a harsh, dramatic light. Later, shooting from a lower angle, I found I preferred the full length shot, which feels less confrontational and more contemplative. I aimed to capture Will against fields and clifftops that offer both openness and edge, stillness and tension.” More from Stone Walls around a Glass House coming shortly. He has tousled dark hair and looks down, wearing a fitted long sleeved top and very wide, loose dark trousers. He grips a long thin bamboo staff in one hand, its tip planted in the grass ahead of him, and the pole cuts diagonally across the frame. A small bush sits on the horizon to the left.
