The devil’s in the details on Joe Mellors’ new EP, and ooh does the devil get down! The Manchester-raised, London-based DJ and producer’s record “I Wanna Know” is a deep and funky exploration of the maximal side of minimal tech. Its sleazy, sophisticated grooves are deceptively steady: pounding basslines lock dancers in, while psychedelic twists and turns keep them on their toes.
“Be Real” is a softly triumphant slice of sultry house, where chirpy vocals, wooden percussion, and sparkly effects collide in a sound that’s equal parts retro and futuristic. “I Wanna Know” sounds like if the nighttime babble of creatures on a pond became a discotheque, layering filtered whispers and low throbs with claps, bongos, and skittering hi-hats.
Mellors’ beloved wobbles take center stage over the moody synths and warm low-end of “Acid Handshake”, before “1111” dials in the tech with robotic chugs, software-like bleeps, and an almost motherly vocal. And don’t miss the slow burn of “Reprosper,” where smackin’ drums, errant whirs, and mischevious laughter melt into a steamy debauch.
Party-ready yet rich in quirks, this record rewards deep listening, without ever losing sight of the dancefloor.
