1/2 Woke up to this and… well, I could feel the whole city celebrating. Well, almost. After weeks and weeks of being blanketed by the haze today felt like a curse had been lifted.

2/2 To celebrate I ate some misshapen fried foods in the evening. Felt like a curry puff, fried banana and fried kueh bakul “party” lah.

I can’t believe it. “Midnight Diner” Season 6 is here already on Netflix. Only the first episode has dropped so we will be watching at the same time (almost) as viewers in Japan. I thought we’d have to wait a while before we get to watch the new season but here we are. If you have never watched this charming show, go start now on Netflix. The older seasons are still there but don’t watch late at night because you’re going to get hungry… be warned! #midnightdiner #kualalumpur #october2026

“I love it that the food all sits easy on your mind and tastebuds”, I wrote to WILLIN LOW as I chomped on his artfully simple makan at his new outpost - CASA MORI, 11 Dempsey Rd.

He’s a hop, skip and jump away from our Violet Oon Singapore outpost - in that cloistered F&B sanctuary that is Dempsey Hill.

Last week it was frozen yoghurt with grandson E, aged 10 and today at lunch - I picked up My Secret Chef, F, aged a super tall 15, from his gym with his ravenous appetite - to lunch.

I continued as I chomped on lunch to wassap to Willin, “I love the veggie creamy sauce served with Broccolini and roasted Brussels Sprouts - enlivened with bits and pieces of crispy stuff!!!

“I like the way I can say “crispy stuff” without being epicurean-ly challenged and that the eater outer - ME - is the main event ….. he he he he!”

Out of the scorching sun, the decor - cavern-like and high ceilings but still all enveloping, with darkened ambience - is one of the prettiest iterations of the high ceiling-ed lofty space that distinguishes the former army warehouse buildings of Dempsey. And the serve team were friendly and rather sweet!

Grandson F. & I both ordered the 2-course set lunch ($35++), with dessert at $5 each and 2 dishes from the à la carte.

Was it Spanish & Singapore? The descriptor is “Casa Mori is a modern Asian-Spanish fusion restaurant located at Dempsey Hill in Singapore, co-created by chefs Willin Low and José Alonso.”

Could I tell? Does it matter? Not really - it is all well cooked, with flavours and textures well combined and YUMS yet not demanding of attention. The hamburger was particularly good and not screaming HAMBURGER - with a well mixed up filling of loosely packed ground Wagyu beef and more bits and pieces - in between a really delish brioche-like halved bun. Do order the octopus.

BRAVO Willin - the lawyer-turned-chef - who I 1st met nearly 30 years ago at the check-out supermarket counter at Nottingham - where both Willin and my daughter Su- Lyn - were studying at Nottingham University! The home of Robin Hood. Does this account for the slightly renegade choice of both their careers???

1/2 The nicest thing happened today… I finally got this beautiful painting framed after hanging on to it for a couple years. James had made it for my birthday.

2/2 The framer surprised me by putting glass at the back too so I can see this message from James. I had not requested it but he surprised me… so thoughtful, right? I was delighted. And touched.

Monday blues, of the best kind. I was waiting at @thepilatesroom109 porch and looked up to see… the sky turn blue. Wow. I was thrilled. The sun was out and cast shadows on the ground. And of course, the studio cat basked in that lovely warm spot. I cannot tell you how much that blue sky, warm sun and Pilates session with @pilateswithmaals cheered me up. #mondaybluesky #bangsar #kualalumpur #october2026

Needed a bit of cheer so I ordered some apom… but not just any old apom. These are from Apong Guan, the legendary Penang apom stall which is now in KL, and these babies were still warm when they got to me. Fluffy with a spongy texture, it has coconut, bananas and corn. Never mind about shio pans, Apong Guan’s apoms are so good. #supportlocal #tipyourfooddeliveryguy #kualalumpur #october2026

I love eating anywhere in the world with Chef @willcookwilleat — Italy, Hong Kong, New York City, so far … but my favorite place to pick up a pair of chopsticks with him is always #Singapore. He knows all the best places! This week, Chef said, “Let’s go have my favorite wanton mee,” which also happens to be one of the #Singaporean dishes I’m always craving. Willin’s favorite place is a little stall in an old hawker centre — Guan Kee Wanton Noodle in the heart of Geylang East Market. Alas, when we got there, it was closed! But it turns out that the other WTM stall around the corner is not bad — the thin egg noodles had a nice spring to them, the roast pork slices were fine and the pork wantons were plentiful. Willin gave his added chicken feet a thumbs up as well. Now, if you have followed Willin on @instagram , you’ll know what a curry puff aficionado he is, and his favorite curry puff place also happens to be in this hawker centre. But it was also closed! So off we went to have a lovely walk, coffee and a long gab instead. Happy to report that that tiny and charming @brawn_and_brains serves terrific iced coffees and a seriously outstanding iced strawberry matcha tea. It’s so rare that we are in the same city at the same time, so every minute is a treasure. Until we eat again, dear @willcookwilleat ! Everyone, go check out his new restaurant, @casamori.sg ! 🫶✨#bffs #willinlow #wantonmee

Jerald asked how I felt after the first two sets of Pendlay rows at 20kg and I said, “It’s challenging but I think I can go heavier.” So the rest of the sets were at 25kg. Also I did something I have always struggled with: reverse lunges with 5kg weights. A good day at @clubaloha.co with @jeraldkang Never mind about the haze, can’t do anything about that but I can lift. #alohamuscleclub #wemove #kualalumpur #october2026

Last Saturday I went to a panettone tasting at @twenty2bakery_ where baker/owner @boling_ang let us try two slices of the competition panettone he will be taking to Milan for the Panettone World Cup in November. We were asked about taste, texture, aroma. I very quickly knew which I preferred and immediately finished the whole slice. I guess I am never going to be a judge but heck, I’m a good eater. Good luck, sifu (I call Ang that because in his previous life as a barista he taught me how to do a pourover!). You already are a champ and I will be cheering for you. #panettonelessons #latergram #kualalumpur #october2026

It’s all about perspectives: That hazy shot of TRX I took this evening is an example of a bad day in KL. Bad air day. But actually it’s an improvement when you look at the second picture which was taken this morning. You can hardly make out TRX. So yes, better after the rain but still bad. Nothing went according to plan today, and a bad tummy plus the bad air meant a day spent indoors. At least I made some progress with “Sapiens”. Perspectives. #anotherbadairday #kualalumpur #october2026

My eyes told me before I checked the Air Quality Index in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon. Very unhealthy. Actually, my eyes… my nose… my skin…. told me it’s bad today. SO BAD. #haze #transboundary #kualalumpur #october2026
