Minneapolis, last weekend to see works from “Autobiography of a Contact Sport” in “Rec Center” at @davidpetersengallery “This summer, at David Petersen Gallery, we’re approaching the gallery as a community center. Less a space of static display than a site of shared use and activity. As a space for gathering, improvisation and exchange, both the exhibition and individual works encapsulate solidarity, strength and curiosity. Following the exhausting and traumatic winter of battling ICE, protecting our neighbors, and mourning Renée Good and Alex Pretti, the gallery will function not as a place of explicit protest but as a representation of what art can do to motivate, empower and shine joy on us as humans.” Participating artists include BANNER PROJECT, Erik Benson, Andrea Bowers, Heather Cook, Douglas Ewart, Mike Farrie, Wing Young Huie, Marcus Jahmal, Char Jeré, Natalie Mazorol, Joseph Montgomery, KingDemetrius Pendleton, Nancy Rexroth, Tina Tavera and curated by @willenbringjesse “Autobiography” of a Contact Sport explores my nostalgia and love for the game that shaped me. This work puts you on the sideline, in the helmet, and in the bleachers with the joy and heartache that characterize the sport. Selected by @american_photography_winners and featured by Buzzfeed and The Guardian. Project link in bio

This is Wing Young Huie’s portrait of the Kids Cook Program at Loring Elementary in North Minneapolis from the year 2000. It’s a fantastic @wingyounghuie photograph, and it’s going to be up at this group show at @davidpetersengallery opening this Saturday. The show is called DPG Rec, a tribute to the summertime city rec center. It’s curated by David and my guy @willenbringjesse. I spoke with the two of them about the show, about the idea of the summer in the city rec center, and why recreation with your neighbors is such an important concept, especially this summer, especially in our city. The opening is at 2 tomorrow—there will be art and hot dogs. The link to the convo is in my bio.
