When I found out I was pregnant, preparing for a baby went beyond buying tiny clothes and figuring out which stroller to get. Although please, the tiny clothes had me 😭😂

We also had to think about the life we were bringing her into and how we wanted to show up as parents. These are five things we put in place:

1. Created our wills. This isn’t the most “exciting”part of preparing for a baby, but it mattered to us. We wanted to document our wishes, including who we would want to care for our daughter if something happened to us. I created mine with @willfulwills and it was honestly so easy.

2. Opened an RESP: We wanted saving for her future education to be something we intentionally made room for. We use @wealthsimple and have absolutely no issues . In my opinion this is one of the biggest ways to set your child up for success.

3. Put life insurance in place. We talked about what life would look like financially if God forbid, one of us was no longer here. Having a child made that conversation feel even more important because there would now be someone depending on us for everything.

 4. Created a “childcare” sinking fund: Essentially, money we set aside gradually for present and future childcare costs. We also put this in a high interest savings account. Some of the high interest savings account I’ve tried are @simpliifin @eqbank @neofinancial

5. Talked about our approach to parenting! Everyone should talk about this before kids but also when you’re pregnant. We also discussed discipline, our values and the kind of home we wanted our child to grow up in.

What are some things you did to prepare? Share this with someone who might benefit from it?

1) Name my spouse as a regular TFSA beneficiary.
They’ll receive the balance tax-free, BUT naming them as a successor holder can allow my TFSA to roll over to them (regardless of their personal TFSA contribution room) to continue growing tax-free.

2) Put off writing a Will.
No one wants to talk about it, but letting provincial law determine what happens to your assets isn’t what you want either. And writing a legal Will no longer necessarily means finding a lawyer - options like Willful exist. @willfulwills

3) Leave my RRSP & TFSA sitting in cash.
Contributing is only step one — the money needs to actually be invested to grow toward your long-term goals.
