Do you have a will? 👀 Because until very recently, my answer was no. And it had been sitting on my life-admin list for waaay too long. So for #BCMakeAWillWeek, I finally sat down with @willfulwills to actually deal with it.

I wanted to know I’d actually formalized all the things you really don’t want other people having to figure out for you if you’re no longer there to make critical decisions, which is all the more important for me since becoming a single mum.

Of course I built this up to be a huge, intimidating thing, but Willful literally walks you through everything online from the comfort of your own home, taking you step-by-step through a simple process.

It was SUCH a huge relief to check off my to-do list, because at the end of the day, a will isn’t for you...it’s to ensure your loved ones have what they need if the worst case happens.

Ilish Craig lost her grandmother and her mother within a year of each other, two losses that prompted her to prepare her own end-of-life plans. As a personal support worker, she’s seen some of her elderly patients avoid these conversations or brush them under the rug, while others are “calm, cool, and relaxed,” knowing they have plans in place.

Julia never expected that ticking a box on a bank application would change the course of her life. But then again, she never expected to be widowed at age 31 with a three-week-old baby either.

After her husband passed away from cancer, Julia found herself navigating life as a young widow. She didn’t have to worry about the finances, thanks to their extensive pre-planning. But she had to navigate her new reality: reading a pamphlet titled “What do I do now?” while her friends were planning bachelorette parties and vacations.

In this month’s edition of Willful Stories, Julia shares how her husband’s passing led her to “swim towards joy” by founding a community for widows and widowers who want to find love after loss.
