Some trips you take for work. This one I’ll carry with me for the rest of my career. My command selected me to go to Parris Island to watch three of my poolees graduate. Two came from Perth Amboy HS and one from Sayreville War Memorial HS.

I stood on that parade deck and watched them become United States Marines. I remember when they were just students asking me questions in a school hallway. They weren’t sure they could do it, and their families weren’t sure either. Then they stepped on the yellow footprints, made their first call home from the same phones every recruit uses, and gave everything they had for 13 weeks on this island.

All three also became U.S. citizens. They came to this country chasing something better, and now they’ve earned the title Marine and the right to call this country their own. 🇺🇸

As a Dominican-born Marine myself, watching that hit different. I came to this country from Santiago, Dominican Republic when I was 10 years old, not knowing a word of English. Years later I made the decision to become a Marine, and that decision also made me a citizen. So watching them walk across that parade deck as Marines and American citizens was an honor. I’ve lived that moment. Seeing them in uniform with their families around them reminded me exactly why I do this job.

To PFC Bautista, PFC Kimu, and PFC Abreu: I’m proud of you. You did this. Semper Fidelis.

To every student at Perth Amboy HS and Sayreville War Memorial HS who’s wondering what comes after graduation: they sat in the same classrooms you’re sitting in now. If you want to know if you have what it takes, DM me. I’ll tell you the truth about all of it, the hard parts too.

We make Marines. 🦅🌎⚓
