The game isn't avoiding burnout. The game is recovery that actually sticks.

Most of us take "unannounced breaks" or vacations hoping to reset, but we come back to the same punch in the face.

Real recovery requires changing the conditions of the work, not just stepping away from it.

🎙️ @wilschroter & @ryanrutan breaking it down on the latest episode of #StartupTherapy podcast.

Just because you can post it, doesn’t mean you should.

As a founder, you’re not just a person on social media anymore — you’re the voice of your company.
Every post carries weight. Every word has ripple effects you might not even see.

You might have 1,000 thoughts behind what you say…
But your audience only hears 10 words — and they’ll interpret them their way.

Your intention is private.
Your impact is public.
And that’s the difference between being authentic and being reckless.

At what point does “bigger” stop being better? 🤔

We obsess over headcount, funding rounds, and logos… then act surprised when all that growth turns us into a slower, messier, worse company. More money, more people, more problems — if quality doesn’t scale with size, what are we actually building?

If you had to choose right now: a bigger company or a better one?

Visibility feels like momentum — until you realize it’s just a sugar high.

In the early days, it’s so easy to chase applause: the talks, the panels, the dinners, the high-fives.
It feels like progress… but it quietly replaces the work that actually moves the company forward.

That’s the trap:
validation is instant, productivity is slow burn.
One gives you dopamine.
The other gives you a business.

At some point every founder has to choose which diet they’re really on — the quick hit or the compounding one.

If this one hits a little too close to home… you’re not alone.

Sometimes it’s not your startup that’s broken — it’s your energy.

You can have the drive, the discipline, the vision…
but still feel nothing when you show up to work.
That’s not laziness — that’s burnout.

It doesn’t mean you need to quit or start over.
It just means you need to step back long enough to reset.
Because even the best companies fail if the person at the wheel runs out of fuel.

Sometimes a “promotion” is just a gentler way of saying you’re being pushed out.
Boards don’t want an air strike — they want an air lock. Equity math, optics, litigation risk, knowledge transfer — there’s a thousand reasons they won’t rip the band-aid off.

If your title suddenly changes to something like Chief Vision Officer or Director of Strategy, ask the hard questions. Protect your equity, your role, and the part of the work that actually matters to you.

For a lot of founders and team members, it’s not about hating work — it’s about how we work.
We don’t miss conference rooms or commutes.
We miss connection.

Remote culture isn’t broken — it’s just different.
The challenge isn’t bringing people back to desks, it’s finding new ways to bring them back to each other.

Everywhere you look, someone’s trying to tell you you’re broken — and then sell you the fix.

Social media has turned “self-improvement” into a business model:
Step 1: Create the problem.
Step 2: Sell the solution.

But founders already have enough real problems to solve.
We don’t need new ones manufactured for us.

Be yourself… about 6% of the time.
Authenticity is fuel—but as a founder, your title amplifies your tone. Use a filter, not a flamethrower. Edit before you hit send; protect the team and the outcome.

Most founders think they need more time to get things done.
What they actually need is more focus.

Building a house or building a startup works the same way — one small, consistent task at a time. The constraints don’t slow you down… they cut out the distractions that never mattered in the first place.

Deadlines aren’t scary. They’re liberating.
They force clarity. They force focus.
They show you what really moves the needle.

As a founder, most of your inbox is noise.
If it’s truly important, they’ll follow up.
If not, you just saved yourself wasted time.
