Test chairs are an important part of the design process, which is why every chair project starts from a rough prototype out of pine or poplar. Our goal is to always produce heirloom quality furniture, but at the end of the day it’s meant to be used. So making sure the chair has the right dimensions and a comfortable“sit” is arguably more important than the aesthetic details. Plus any opportunity to use our travisher from @windsorworkshop is always welcome!

📍 Location, Location, Location 📸

Although there were many spaces to choose from for a portrait of @windsorworkshop , I was really drawn to the steam bending room 🪑

Albeit with some organised chaos in the background, I loved the simple colour palette and endless shapes which allowed me to play with a few different compositions for this portrait set up.

As a photographer Ive always found there is a certain magic in the quiet smaller details in a space 📸

Details which can reveal so much but can easily go unnoticed 🔎

This is @windsorworkshop from a different perspective 🪑

As an early birthday present (thank you @lindajnathan ♥️), I attended an excellent five day chair making course in West Sussex led by James Mursell @windsorworkshop
The chair is home and ready to be oiled to show the beautiful grain of Ash and Sycamore

Tools of the Chairmakers trade. It can get a little lonely working in a one man (+1 spaniel) shop, lucky I always have my buddies in here with me. We work well together, keeping each other sharp and making plenty of shavings.

Getting In The Groove

There’s something extremely satisfying about hand shaping furniture. Especially went you hit that almost zen state of flow where the tool glides effortlessly through the wood. And this @narextools_cz Adze from @leevalleytools and Travisher from @windsorworkshop are the perfect combo for getting the contours of a seat just right!

Hollowing tools.
Chair making is a multi disciplinary art form.
Seat shaping is a kin to sculpting.
The use of hand tools in the process can be meditative, as one discovers the run of the grain, having to change direction as the wood dictates the work.

Final day with @windsorworkshop shaping and fitting the arm and bow. Really pleased with the finished result, and I loved the course with James. We had folk who were novice woodworkers who all went home with great chairs so if you fancy giving it a go I can definitely recommend it!
