Sen. @WinGatchalian74 joined the viral TikTok “My Wedding Date” filter trend and was given May 6, 2029 as his supposed big day.

Instead of brushing it off, he paused to compute how old he would be by then, laughing as he realized he’d be in his mid-50s. Calling the date “feasible,” he delivered the punchline with trademark humor — saying that as long as he’s still alive by that time, the wedding can push through.

Today, I had a productive meeting with Senator Win Gatchalian—Chair of the Senate Finance Committee, and former Chair of the Senate Ways and Means and Education Committees.

Even while I was at Harvard, we have continued our conversations with him and his team to push for reforms that will improve ease of doing business and paying taxes in the Philippines.

With the passage of the Ease of Paying Taxes (EOPT) Law, we discussed the BIR’s implementing rules and how to realign them with the true spirit of the law—especially on VAT refunds and the establishment of the new VAT Refund Center and RBE Taxpayer Service under CREATE MORE. These reforms are critical to further simplifying our tax system and attracting more foreign investors.

We also talked about the Global Minimum Tax (GMT)—a key DOF priority—where all our OECD discussions will now be translated into a bill that Senator Gatchalian will author.

As the new Chair of the Finance Committee, we likewise raised concerns on corruption, budget insertions, and the need to prioritize MSMEs in government projects, particularly in the provinces. We discussed setting a cap on big contractors to prevent monopoly, alongside mandatory tax audits and inspections of past projects to ensure transparency and accountability.

At the end of the day, every peso counts—it is the hard-earned money of our taxpayers. And it is our shared responsibility to make sure that it funds education, health, and inclusive development, not corruption.

📚 I also had the chance to share my book Reimagining the World Without Corruption, which reflects the very reforms we continue to champion.

🔎𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟓 𝐨𝐟 𝐏𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐁𝐮𝐝𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬.
