What Is Ragtime Banjo Revival All About?
Ragtime Banjo Revival (RBR) is a bold cultural outreach project that aims to strengthen and grow community through live and recorded experiences of historical popular music. The project revives the joy of the ragtime banjo style by illuminating its presence in our shared musical past-and by answering the question most people, in and outside of music circles, haven’t lately thought to ask: Why ragtime, and why now?
The answer lies in the very sounds and stories of this project. Despite its trajectory from the most popular music in the English-speaking world to near-fatal obscurity, this music, its creators, and its history do live today in our relationships with music, popular culture, identity, and history. While audiences tap and hum along with the project’s inspired arrangements, they’ll learn enough to change the way they listen to music and the way understand the development of culture. With a curious and optimistic spirit, RBR educates and inspires, welcoming the newcomer and cultivating respect across areas of difference. Do you know,
How much you are seen?
How much you are heard?
How much you are felt?
How much you are held?
.
How every moment,
Every breath,
Every feeling—
.
The joy,
The love,
The pain,
The confusion...
.
It is all for you.
.
It is all part of the magic that is meant for you.
.
It is all part of the magnificent journey
Your soul is here to travel.

It is yours.
All of it.
For your highest good.
You cannot get it wrong.

Lovely concert yesterday for the Jewish Hechtman Senior Center in West Bloomfield Fall party 🍁🎃🎻🎶
From Tova the Life Enrichment Coordinator "Our residents had a marvelous time at our fall party, and the music was FABULOUS. While the classical selections were enjoyable, I think the residents got a special kick out of the quartet’s renditions of popular songs (including the “Ghostbusters” theme, “Sweet Caroline”, “Happy Together”, and more)"

I had an awesome time with my @michiganphil colleagues at last night’s concert at The Wilcox House in downtown Plymouth. Tangos, rags, Bach and Beatles! My favorite kind of summer gig, and a great way to connect with audience members and get excited for the start of a new concert season.

We all know and love the famous @zingermansdeli in @kerrytowna2 but did you know Zingermans has an entire family of businesses? They include a restaurant, bakehouse, creamery, candy factory, coffee shop, and more. Visit several of the Zingerman’s businesses in a not-so-secret spot off Airport Blvd!

Want to learn how to taste cheese🧀 ? Bake some of Zingerman’s popular recipes🥐 ? Run a business the Zingerman’s way🚂 ? Have a stunning wedding downtown or on a farm? Sign up for tastings, classes, and more. Link to more info in bio⤴️

Most days I sit at home and slowly deepen the groove of my favorite spot on the sofa--the domestic equivalent, maybe, of the forces that have given the Earth its lovely contours over the millennia.

On social media, we show anything but what is typical about our lives. Anything but the mundane.

A few weeks ago, I deactivated my accounts--leaving only Instagram, browser-only--because for my entire adult life, I hadn't known a life free of digital noise and heavily-curated online communication. It was getting to me. It was becoming toxic. (I know I'm far from the first person to experience this.)

I can't say I've missed it, much.

I do like that social media helps me express myself. I like writing for me, and I like writing for others to read. I also like taking photos. This one was taken a few days ago at Avalanche Peak in Yellowstone National Park--on my COVID Day 16, I might add. It represents a very atypical scene in my life. Worth sharing? Maybe, maybe not.

I dated someone once who'd gone into marketing after college, and I was incredulous when she told me she didn't own a personal Facebook or Instagram account. She used both professionally every day! But she saw them as tools. Tools of commerce, which they are--now, increasingly. Instead of connecting with friends on social media, she would host travelers from all over the world (like me--that's how we met) and she would have conversations, face-to-face, or she would write letters or emails. In retrospect, I think she was really wise for that.

Someone recently said to me that social media makes P.R. reps out of us all: meaning, it puts pressure on us to post our opinions, often uninformed or best-kept private. And that is certainly true.

If I ever do go back to using social media on a daily basis, it'll be on one condition: That my posts do not become (again) my primary form of self-knowledge/self-expression or the primary way in which I try to make a difference--to have a 'presence'--in the world.
