Children need to see themselves in stories. But they also need stories that show them worlds they haven't met yet. 📚✨ That’s the magic of a book.
And yet, only 36.1% of children and young people say they enjoy reading in their free time.

That matters - because a book can take a child somewhere they’ve never been, introduce them to people they’ve never met and show them possibilities they didn’t know existed.

Sometimes all it takes is one story for a child to think: “Maybe I could do that.”

When we open a book with a child, we’re not just helping them learn to read. We’re helping them imagine their place in the world.

What book opened up a new world for you when you were young? ❤️

Reception/Year 1 had a great time at Rock Ferry library today. We had owl babies read to us then we made our own owl masks and chose a book to bring back to class. Thanks to our parent helpers. We couldn’t have done it without you! @wirral_libraries

I love picking up a new library book, and this title from @addiepray looks so intriguing!
The coming-of-age novel was published last year and has been described as unsettling, moving and ferocious.
@sara.pascoe is a firm fan (which is good enough for me!): “literary, thrilling, hugely funny, with a massive heart”.
Have you read this? What did you think?!

Today I returned my first read from our new local library: Heswall. @wirral_libraries

Love, Leda, by Mark Hyatt, is the 43rd book I’ve read this year. Written in the 1960s, it follows a working class gay man chaotically indulge in everything Soho has to offer.

The writing style is a descriptive commentary on the protagonist’s behaviours and adventures, often sexual in nature (and graphically described!) which would have been ground breaking at the time it was published. It is a unique read, and explicitly tackles themes which are often avoided or only alluded to with euphemisms.

Reading the book felt as though the author was processing aspects of his own identity, heritage, relationships, desires and internal conflicts. Learning more about Mark Hyatt, this made sense as there were various parallels, which I won’t share in case of spoilers!

This novel offers a unique insight into the realities of 1960s London for gay working class men.

Perfect if you love raw, gritty and graphic reads!
