Were your 20s and 30s a little too hedonistic? Can you reverse the damage? We talk to co founder and clinical lead Dan & Yiannis from @with_emerald

The good news? Generally, yes.

But according to our latest podcast guest, the habits you build in your 30s and 40s can make a huge difference to how you age.

Leave it until your 50s and getting started can be harder. Your injury risk may be higher, and making lasting changes can feel more challenging.

The message? You’re never too old to make a change. But why wait until it gets harder?

You don’t have to live like a saint. Just start making choices your future self will thank you for.

Watch the clip and let us know: Are you living for today or looking after your future self?

This week on the Gavin Sisters Wellness Show, we’re joined by Daniel McNally, co founder of Emerald Health, andYiannis Balanos Clinical Lead, to explore how we can take control of our health through prevention rather than reaction.

What health markers should we be checking? What can our blood tests tell us about what’s happening beneath the surface? And how can we spot potential problems early, rather than waiting until something goes wrong?

If you’re interested in understanding your body better, optimising your health and taking a more proactive approach to your future wellbeing, this is a fascinating conversation.

Because being healthy isn’t just about not being ill. It’s about understanding your health today so you can make better decisions for tomorrow. @with_emerald

RED-s educational panel with Emerald Health.

We hosted a panel talk on all things relative energy deficiency in sports, with Dr Shad and Lizzie from Emerald Health. RED-s is such a common and silent condition that affects a lot of endurance athletes and runners, so we hosted this event to raise awareness and educate people on the causes, symptoms and management.

Easily one of the most interesting and insightful parts of this reset!

If I’d recommend investing in anything, it would be a yearly blood panel by @with_emerald because preventative healthcare is the best investment you can make! As an active female there are so many signs that can only come up in blood tests which could in turn help prevent injuries, especially when our hormones have a big role to play!

#ad | A slightly more personal one from me today 🤍

Health, like life, is complicated. It’s multi-faceted and deeply personal. There’s no one way to do it right, and it rarely comes with one neat and tidy answer. Sometimes the best thing you can do is focus on one piece, one step at a time. At other points, it’s helpful to zoom out and see the picture as a whole.

That’s what appealed to me about partnering with @with_emerald - the ability to do both, and to feel like I can take a little more ownership of my health. From one in-clinic appointment, their comprehensive health test looks at over 100 biomarkers, with every result reviewed and interpreted by a GP and translated into meaningful health insights you can actually understand, alongside a personalised action plan.

It’s not about having all the answers. I’m still undergoing multiple NHS investigations into the more complicated aspects of my health (and even then, I know a diagnosis is only one piece of the puzzle). For me, it’s about understanding my body a little better, so I can look after it while I get on with living in it.

Over the past few years I’ve taken routine blood test screenings not because I’m unwell, but because I’m a firm believer in preventative healthcare. We don’t wait for our teeth to hurt before you start brushing it, so why should we treat our bodies any differently?

If we can proactively understand our medical health and prevent diseases or issues occurring in the first place, that is what good healthcare should be.

Personally, I get regular blood work because I push my body hard in training so I want to make sure I don’t dip into the realm of over-training. I also have Thalassemia trait so naturally a few things will appear abnormal on my blood test, and it’s something I would like to monitor ongoing. My iron level was quite high this time around even accounting for my thalassemia trait so that’s something the GP suggested seeing a specialist for.

Be proactive, not reactive.

The electrolyte industry annoys me so much. There are so many new companies who are selling electrolytes to the general population. These people respectfully are sat at a desk for 8+ hours, working out but likely not hard enough to warrant spending £40+ a month on a salty drink.

The marketing of these companies over the last couple of years have convinced these people who were scared to eat salty foods, that they should be literally drinking salt

But on the other hand, we are all training like athletes and I recently had a blood test with @with_emerald where the results showed me I actually needed to be having more electrolytes

Looking good and feeling good sometimes aren’t enough in telling you what’s actually going on inside your body. When getting regular check ups becomes this easy, there’s literally no excuse to not get your bloods done. I booked a health check with @with_emerald and it tested for over 120 biomarkers, giving me an in depth analysis of health markers that a regular blood test wouldn’t pick up on.

Really proud of this one 🤍

Women’s health is a topic I’ve always been incredibly passionate about, so creating spaces where women can come together, learn, ask questions, share experiences and feel supported is a huge part of why I started @girlswhorunlondon in the first place.

Unfortunately women’s health still does not get near enough attention but I want my community to be a place where we can have conversations around all of it. From our physical health and hormones to recovery, nutrition, mental wellbeing and everything in between.

A huge thank you to the team of specialists at @with_emerald for sharing your knowledge with our community 🫶🏽

If you’re a specialist working in women’s health in any capacity and would love to collaborate on future events please do get in touch 🤍

Thank you @treelogy_london for hosting us and @sabrinabernard.photo for capturing it all 📸

AD | Blood testing is something I’m increasingly using both personally and within my work as a specialist running physio.

When someone is experiencing recurrent injuries, persistent fatigue, poor recovery or changes in performance, it’s important to consider the bigger picture. Strength and rehab are hugely important, but sometimes there may also be underlying factors worth investigating.

This is where I’ve found @with_emerald really helpful. Their comprehensive blood testing looks at a wide range of biomarkers, with access to medical professionals who can interpret your results and advise on appropriate next steps.

As a physio, I’ve referred patients back to their GP for blood tests, but sometimes not all the biomarkers I’d ideally like investigated have been included. Having access to more comprehensive testing can therefore be really valuable.

I’ve experienced this personally too. My testing identified a ferritin level of 42 ng/mL. Although within many standard laboratory reference ranges, ferritin below ~50 ng/mL can warrant closer consideration in female endurance athletes, particularly alongside symptoms such as fatigue or poor recovery.

For me, having this information gave me something objective to discuss with a specialist GP and monitor over time.

Sometimes looking at what’s happening internally can provide another piece of the injury and performance puzzle.

This test was kindly gifted and I’m working in partnership with @with_emerald.
