A special thank you to Monticello’s Jane Kamensky, for an engaging and enlightening visit to W&L! A day of conversation with students, a visit to see the treasures of the library’s Special Collections, and a public lecture at the University Chapel to make Thomas Jefferson — and John Adams — proud. In her talk she spoke of “the lost art of civic friendship,” but based on the success of her conversations with students, faculty, and the community at large, if it was lost, Dr. Kamensky found it. Our gratitude as well to Eric Wilson of the Rockbridge Historical Society and the Virginia Society of the Cincinnati who helped organize and sponsor the event. Thank you all!

How do you go from law student to in-house counsel?

Earlier this week, Taylor Brown (IBM), Bjoern Hansen (UnitedLex), Kristina Hartman (Virginia Tech), and Ross Hays ‘12L (Fisher Auto Parts) walked through their own paths into corporate legal departments, what their work actually looks like day to day, and practical advice for landing that first role.

We’re grateful for their candor and insight, and to the Business Law Society moderators Leland Record and Skyler Torres for guiding the conversation.

Special thanks to the Virginia State Bar for sponsoring the program.

This Mock Con Monday, we’re recapping our Young Alumni Weekend event. We were excited to welcome Doug Emhoff, former Second Gentleman of the US, and Adam Spanberger, First Gentleman of Virginia, to campus! #mockcon2028

Mr. Emhoff discussed his experience supporting the Biden Administration while making an impact of his own as well as issues facing today’s young voters. Mr. Spanberger talked to our VIP Reception about life inside the governor’s mansion as a software engineer and his current outdoor initiative.

Why should YOU do Washington Term? Let’s hear from the does-it-all Wash Term Renaissance man, Carter Gleason ‘27, to find out! And come to the INFO SESSION on Thursday, September 24, at 7pm in Huntley Hall 221.

DID YOU KNOW? Carter is an Environmental Studies major (among other things, such as President of @wlu_mocktrial). Environmenatal Studies students who work for an environmental organization in DC during Wash Term get credit toward the major!

Founded in 1987, Washington Term provides W&L students a memorable living and learning experience in Washington, DC, during a six-week, six-credit program each Spring Term. Since its founding in 1987, over 600 Washington Term students have served on Capitol Hill, the Executive Branch, non-profits, news organizations, DC policy shops, and more. In addition to work experience and coursework, each week we meet with DC policy leaders and W&L alum at places like the State Department, Congressional Research Service, Axios.com, and more. Open to ALL majors.
