Alumni Spotlight /// AK Sherman '23L is University Counsel at The University of Alabama.

What do you like about your current job?

Serving my alma mater in my home state feels like a dream job. As I mentioned, I love that on any given day I can be working on several different types of law practice. The variety keeps me engaged and I’m always learning something new, which feels exciting. The cherry on top is that I’m working for a place that is so special to me—the university I attended and have been a fan of my entire life. Roll Tide! (Sorry, I had to.)

What advice do you have for prospective law students?

Well, if you’re a prospective law student reading an interview of an alumni, I already feel confident in your zealousness—but my advice to anyone in law school is to enjoy it. I know it sounds trite, but I mean it! Three years will fly by. In those six semesters, you have the opportunity to form long-lasting friendships with potential future judges, scholars, professors, politicians, etc. in your classmates. W&L Law has a unique environment that develops a tight-knit community. Taking advantage of that and forming long-lasting relationships with my peers remains one of my greatest takeaways. by @wlulaw

Summer Experience /// Gretchen McGrath worked at Alston & Bird in New York City.

How do you think this experience will shape the rest of your time at W&L Law?

Since returning to school, I’ve noticed a greater appreciation for the stakes of disputes I read in my textbooks. These are real people and real businesses, with real problems. We are fortunate to be in a position that they look to us to help them navigate through the turbulence. One of my professors recently shared helpful advice aimed at 3Ls: To effectively deal with other people’s problems, we must make sure we’ve dealt with our own. As 3Ls, we have one year to reinforce healthy routines and prepare to be professionals. His advice was well taken!

I also plan to get more involved in local activities. Like at Alston, W&L has so many great events and community gatherings. And the surrounding area is so beautiful; I want to more fully appreciate it during my final year. by @wlulaw

Alumni Spotlight /// Colin E. Emrich '21L is a Staff Attorney and Senior Judge Law Clerk with the Chief Staff Attorney’s Office for the Court of Appeals of Virginia.

Discuss your career path and how it led you to clerk at the Supreme Court of Virginia?

I came to law school thinking I would be a criminal defense attorney. Very quickly into my 1L year, however, I realized that I just liked the law—especially legal writing. After graduation, I worked at a law firm in Delaware but found the work-life balance wasn’t right for me. So, I pivoted. I started clerking for a state trial court in Philadelphia, and I loved it. I was writing a lot, sitting in court every day (though happily not at counsel table), and keeping business hours. My wife and I missed Virginia though, so when I saw the clerkship opening in Justice Mann’s chambers on SCORE, I applied and was fortunate enough to land the position. We moved back to Virginia a few months later. by @wlulaw

Summer Experience /// Nina Dascoli '27L worked as a Litigation Summer Associate at Holland & Knight LLP in their New York office.

How did you find/get this position?

At the beginning of my 1L spring, I began reaching out to W&L Law and undergraduate alumni working at large law firms in New York City. Rather than approaching those conversations solely as part of my job search, I focused on building relationships and learning from alumni about their experiences practicing in New York. Through that process, I connected with an associate in Holland & Knight’s New York office, who introduced me to several other litigators and W&L Law graduates at the firm. Those relationships ultimately led to an interview and my summer associate position. Beyond the opportunity to spend my summer at H&K, the process also gave me a life-long mentor who has continued to be an important resource throughout law school and my professional development. by @wlulaw

Alumni Spotlight /// Danielle Potter '21L works in the structured finance practice at Mayer Brown in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Which W&L classes and/or experiences do you think were most helpful in preparing you for this job?

I had so many amazing professors at W&L. Some of them taught me in classes that specifically helped prepare me for my work at Mayer Brown. I had the pleasure of being in Professor Calhoun’s Contracts class my 1L year, which piqued my interest in the study of contract interpretation. And it’s hard to imagine making it as far as I have in structured finance without the foundation Professor Bowden set for me in his Secured Transactions class. Dean Danforth, Larry Manning, and Astrika Adams all gave me invaluable experience with drafting and interpreting contracts during law school and built up my confidence before going into practice.

Others taught me in subjects that have very little to do with my current practice but helped me learn how to think like a lawyer. Professor MacDonnell’s criminal investigations class was fantastic at teaching us to analogize and apply rules to varying fact patterns. The fact patterns I look at now are a little less flashy than the cops and robbers we encountered in his class, but I use that skill every day. by @wlulaw
