We have an exceptional cohort of artists shaping Remittance – one of the two exhibitions currently on view at the Mead. Pictures courtesy of Jenifer K Wofford and and Mel Taing. Jenifer K Wofford was born in San Francisco, but she was raised in Hong Kong, Dubai, Malaysia, and the Bay Area. Wofford’s style features strong color, line and pattern, a crisp visual approach, and a touch of absurdism. In addition, her art is shaped by a deeply felt sense of curiosity, irony, and tragicomedy. For Remittance, Wofford produced a mixed media installation entitled “Utang/Na Loob”, a slight twist on the Filipino phrase for one’s “debt of gratitude.” It names an obligation that is at once intimate and infinite—the debt owed to those who sacrificed for you, who carried you, who went away so that you could stay. Part confessional, part photo booth, part Western Union kiosk, the booth is a space for transactions: Inside, visitors can sit and reflect at a window staffed by a large, glowing rock. While thinking, they’re invited to pass prompts designed by the artist through to the other side. Want to learn more? Come visit Remittance until Jan. 3, 2027!

NEW YORK:Silverlens is excited to announce Empress, an exhibition of new work by Jenifer K Wofford, running November 5 through December 19, 2026. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, November 5, followed by an artist walkthrough on Saturday, November 7, at 2:00 PM. What if basketball had been invented by Filipinas, and they still ruled the court? That’s the premise of Jenifer K Wofford’s speculative origin myth for the game. The real history belongs to another empire. American teachers brought the game to the colonial Philippines as a sport for girls, then struck it from the curriculum, worried that young women in bloomers would pick up aggression, promiscuity, or even lesbianism. Filipinos fell hard for basketball, but mostly for the men’s game. “Not that any nation celebrates women’s athletics equally, to be clear,” Wofford notes. Her paintings world-build around a 1910s photograph of a girls’ team from Apalit, Pampanga, letting its players break loose. Now they’re diwata, spiritual protectresses, leaping and contorting in poses lifted from art history, colliding in a frenzy without losing an athlete’s precision. Woven banig mats line the gallery walls, turning the gallery into a clubhouse crossed with a tiki lounge. Art + Water has a new identity and a new website, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with how they turned out. "Remittance", curated by Trisha Lagaso Goldberg @tza_lagoldberg explores global themes of resilience, displacement, interdependence, and the enduring ties of family and community. Across the world, remittances—the transfer of money or goods by a foreign worker to an individual, usually a family member, in their home country—provide essential income for households, form a vital part of many nations' economies, and embody profound acts of care and devotion that sustain millions of families. Through installations and multimedia works, the artists in "Remittance" consider specific topics that involve remittances—from Filipino domestic and healthcare workers seeking opportunities abroad, to the complexities of Indigenous nationhood within North America—and together, the exhibition provides a platform to map the legacies of global power structures shaping remittance economies. In a poignant meditation on these bonds that reach across time, borders, and generations, "Remittance" invites us to grapple with the forces that are driving labor migration, and the realities faced by migrant workers, through the deeply personal lens of familial debt and devotion. "Remittance" debuts in Amherst at the Mead Art Museum @meadartmuseum on September15 2026 through January 3, 2027. Remittance is open TODAY through January 3, 2027. Featuring multimedia installations by a dozen contemporary artists, Remittance illuminates the financial, familial, and emotional dimensions of global remittance practices. While it goes by many names, a remittance–simply defined–is a transfer of money or goods by a foreign worker to an individual, traditionally in their home country. The Mead is honored to debut this touring show. Join the curator (@tza_lagoldberg) and many of the artists to celebrate this during a deluxe opening weekend, Oct. 1-3. 😳🥹🥳🦀 FORTY!!!🦀🥳🥹😳 This crab is very much looking forward to this new decade, where my hope is to care less about the things that don’t matter and just the right amount about the things that do, tell people I love them more often, and ask for the things I want. So many of the coolest people I know are already in this club, I’m happy to finally join. Thanks for all the well wishes from near and far, and the celebrations both big and small. The last few days have included: AL’s bday dinner @truelaurels (their smoked salmon dip is one of the very best things I’ve had in SF), scrubbing away all my woes and emerging reborn at Pearl Spa, finding a $50!!! Issey Miyake dress at my favorite secondhand store, my bday dinner at our beloved @mr_rintaro, and a GG park picnic on a classically cloudy SF summer day, complete with dogs and friends, old and new 😊. I’m worn out from all this fun and definitely FEEL 40 in mind, body, and spirit 😂 It’s a gift to age feeling both healthy and loved! Thank you most of all to my amazing husband @albert_harold_lewis who pulled out all the bday magic for me💗💗💗

(1) BLUE SILK RIBBON, ARCHIVED AT FRENCH CORRAL, CA Water-soluble graphite on watercolor paper, hand-sewed to hand-dyed canvas 7’x5′ 2026 My Art Thesis project, exhibited at SOMArts in San Francisco in the Fine Arts + Design Thesis Show Between The Lines! This was such a labor of love (by me and everyone in my class (thank you) and my wonderful professor @woffsilog. Thank u all for all the encouragement and saying I could definitely do it even when I was like oh god. i don't have enough time LOL TY ILY). Fun facts about this piece: the hand-sewing by itself took 14 hours! (I listened to Frankenstein for the first time and it was great) Also, I'd never dyed fabric before??? So that was fun process. And if anyone ever needs watercolor paper...I got u lmao!!!...Everything else I need to say I think I already said my statement so I'm just gonna post that below. This piece is about how much I loved being a girl. Even though I'm not a woman anymore, I still feel very connected to femininity and am fascinated by the opposite of my experience: becoming a woman on purpose. Eleanor Morietti (left) and Vivian Greyhound (right) are from my recent fiction stories, set in the Sierra Nevada mountains. French Corral is a ghost town on one end of the first long distance telephone line, in use from 1878 1898. Sewing Eleanor and Vivian together and to the telephone line ties them to the history of the Sierra Nevada and to my personal practices of mending and archiving. Illustrating Eleanor and Vivian at life size means taking my work and their struggles with femininity (and subsequently, my own) seriously.
