Klub Rupturre!! was a regional TV dance party counting down the top 10 hits of October 17, 1989.

The #1 song on the Klub Rupturre!! countdown for 1989, Super Seismic, ushered in the Loma Prieta earthquake with a resounding chorus of “M-O-V-E- FAST!! B-R-E-A-K- THINGS!!”.

Everything changed that day.

NEW YORK:Silverlens is excited to announce Empress, an exhibition of new work by Jenifer K Wofford, running November 5 through December 19, 2026.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, November 5, followed by an artist walkthrough on Saturday, November 7, at 2:00 PM.

What if basketball had been invented by Filipinas, and they still ruled the court? That’s the premise of Jenifer K Wofford’s speculative origin myth for the game. The real history belongs to another empire. American teachers brought the game to the colonial Philippines as a sport for girls, then struck it from the curriculum, worried that young women in bloomers would pick up aggression, promiscuity, or even lesbianism. Filipinos fell hard for basketball, but mostly for the men’s game. “Not that any nation celebrates women’s athletics equally, to be clear,” Wofford notes.

Her paintings world-build around a 1910s photograph of a girls’ team from Apalit, Pampanga, letting its players break loose. Now they’re diwata, spiritual protectresses, leaping and contorting in poses lifted from art history, colliding in a frenzy without losing an athlete’s precision. Woven banig mats line the gallery walls, turning the gallery into a clubhouse crossed with a tiki lounge. Under the loud colors and crisp lines are serious questions about empire, gender, and who gets to play.

Final weekend to see ya girl Vicki floating over the balcony at @sfmoma . Went to say goodbye to her myself today.

Next stop: LA Olympics 2028, if someone can find me a platform for her to dive from.

Sometimes* as an artist you pull all-nighters and turn into a cave goblin while making your work.

Sometimes as an artist you hand off a file**, wait a bit, then wake up fully rested to delightful updates from someone else who is making the work for you.

Still a long way off from completion, but super excited by these latest updates from the good people at Mosaika, sharing how they're color-matching their glass smalti tiles to my artwork and beginning to lay out the figures.

Hooray!

UTANG/NA LOOB debuted at the Mead Museum in Amherst yesterday. It is part of the exhibition ‘Remittance’, curated by @tza_lagoldberg . This project took everything out of me this past spring and summer, but that's how utang works, I suppose.

I'll share more about it once in situ documentation rolls in. It feels strange not to have my own pics, but there's a whole continent between it and me at the moment (in-progress images here).

More about this piece later, but for now I want to express huge thanks to Trisha, @beckyjdonovan and @snail.pal for steering this project, and to the Mead Museum dream team for finessing its presentation. I absolutely couldn't have done this without the time, talent and expertise of all-stars @megan.badilla , @giannapalanca , @audomatic , @torreya.c and especially Packard Jennings @packard_j . My gratitude runs deep to this mighty crew.

Friends, it's another beautiful weekend in SF: perfect for you to swing through Chinatown and celebrate all of its new and upcoming public art developments, one of which is my own.

Several of us with upcoming projects will be at the CCC Art Center and Design Store from 11 to 3: please swing by!

I would love to hear from Chinatown residents and regulars about what to include in 'Community Treasures', which will eventually become the new Portsmouth Square Clubhouse Art Wall. (My proposal was selected last year, but design development took a backseat to other pressing deadlines until now.)

Anyhow, we're finally ready to get going in earnest! I'll be hosting more targeted community engagement sessions soon, but this Sat 9/12 I'd be happy to hear from anyone who's got a few minutes to say hi and offer some thoughts. Come through!

This 2024 install was just a minute ago! Hard to believe it's already time for VMD to descend from her glorious @sfmoma platform, but her era floating above us ends Sunday Sept 27th.

It was the most amazing, supportive installation experience, thanks in no small part to art consigliera @megan.badilla and art bestie @christinewongyap , with the great mastermind @blarsonblarson setting us up for success.

I feel lucky to have worked with @donrossphoto , @juliechas , @angiewilson00 , @afmelara and kathleenmcguire for related reasons along the way, too.

VMD would never have happened were it not for the wondrous @tlzimbardo . I owe her everything, and am grateful for her vision and her calm, kind presence through it all, in the midst of so much else going on.

Lastly, gratitude as always to Vicki Manalo Draves herself, for her grace and persistence as our first Asian American Olympic champion. Ready to keep painting her legacy onto an LA wall for the 2028 Olympics! by @woffsilog

Who's got two thumbs, a Woffice, and is ready for the new school year? This guy!

Week 1, done and dusted. It feels weird to not be teaching Fil Am Arts this fall, but I needed that bandwidth to step into my new role as... Program Director for Fine Arts here at USF.

I love teaching and my path has always been art education, but this has rarely aligned with any kind of job security or career advancement. Having been an adjunct forever, only recently have I seen this extend into short full-time contracts and now a leadership role.

Getting to hang out with strange, curious, thoughtful students is a joy. Having excellent colleagues, coworkers and campus buddies is the best. Learning how to be an administrator is daunting, but I love a good challenge.

Anyway if you want to check out one of the more distressing faculty offices on campus, come say hi. I'm wedged in between the giant tape ball and the fake rocks and the big pencil. by @woffsilog

One of my very first VMD prints from 5 years ago has been included in "Made in this Place," opening this Friday evening at @kalwpublicmedia in SF.

Sadly I might miss the reception, but you should definitely catch this show and celebrate its artists and organizers!

Thank you @pureewil and @shreypurohit for the many wonderful things that you both do which include organizing this lovely show.

We're still over a year out before the mosaic for SFO is complete, but it's officially on the way.

My much-refined design made it through SFAC approvals in June and July, and so now Mosaika can begin the glass smalti tile process.

Last week I color-proofed and mailed a print version that Mosaika can more accurately match tiles to, so now they get cranking. Next, I wait a few months then fly off to Montreal to work with the team there. Super excited about learning how they do this! by @woffsilog

Today is the annual SF Marathon, which in 2018 kicked off the beginning of my own kind of marathon: a three week, mostly solo, ride up to Canada and back down again.

The 2018 SF Marathon shut down my intended route across the Golden Gate Bridge, so I went north via Richmond and met @__max_one__ in a San Rafael parking lot to officially began the trip.

Max rode with me for the first two days in California, then I was mostly on my own through Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, staying with friends or checking into cheap motels.

It was fun and epic, but it was definitely not an easy trip: the further north I got, I discovered that I'd lost a lot of the nerve I used to have. I was anxious every single day, stomach so upset I could barely eat. I hadn't gotten confident enough with the new bike I took: it was top heavy and I dropped it a couple of times which stressed me out like crazy. There was a massive heat wave and fire and smoke everywhere. A deer jumped in front of my bike. And also pouring rain and slippery roads.

I was also doing this trip in honor of a dear moto friend who'd passed, so there was a lot of grief. In the middle of the trip I found out another friend had passed, which haunted me further and made me feel like death was really close by.

I got home and basically burst into tears. Sold that bike a month later because it spooked me so much.

I'd do it all again, of course. by @woffsilog

Northern California road trip. I've been grinding away at multiple studio projects all summer, so it was nice to get away for at least a couple of days.

@chez.jmw and I had been conspiring to take
our /5s out on expedition and finally managed to swing it. While I've had mine for close to a decade (and taken many a road trip on other bikes over the years), I hadn't been too sure about taking the old girl too far out. J hadn't tested the limits on his yet, either. But of course, these vintage german beasties are almost impossible to kill, and so alles war wunderbar.

Perfect weather, stunning vistas, fine meals, epic roads. 10/10 would recommend. by @woffsilog
