Shot in the wildly wonderful Lagos, Nigeria, Goodluck is the second short film commissioned by Goalkeepers and @gatesfoundation. @justicemukheli sensitively explores the story of @ajenuene, a new mother who experienced fertility struggles and the cultural stigmas around it. How her belief and determination was finally rewarded with a son named Goodluck. And how important the support from the @mdoc_healthcare team (and their technology) was to navigating her pregnancy and birth.

Again… a big thank you to @maighazala, Khanyi and the Nigerian storytellers and crew who made this happen. And to @jacquibeek, @ramonmellett, and our home production team who held it down while we were away.

“Thula Baba” is the well-known Zulu lullaby that underscores this PSA spot, forming part of a trilogy of films titled “Lullaby” for Amnesty International. In each film, @justicemukheli captures a different preteen mother singing a lullaby to their newborn. This comforting maternal tradition is slowly reframed to show the heart-wrenching consequences of a lack of security, support and education in this high risk group.

“Lullaby” is a deeply human trilogy of films created for Amnesty International. Sensitively directed by @justicemukheli , the campaign draws attention to the disturbing rise in preteen pregnancy in South Africa (2,103 girls aged 10 to 14 gave birth in 2024). A shocking revelation delivered with the ironic tenderness of a lullaby.

Wedged between salt spray and sticky coastal bush winds the Otter Trail.

Last October, I was an initiate of this famous hike. We didn’t have great weather, in fact we were “rained out” and had to use emergency exits on 2 separate days due to rivers in flood. We couldn’t get our Bloukrans Badges of Honour since the exits for the crossing had washed away. So it felt as though we hadn’t really completed the Otter.

And yet, what a beautiful country we live in! What precious wide open spaces and wild windswept shores we get to explore. Dreamy vistas aside, I would do it again anyway for the company and critters alone.
