Northwest Album Of The Day 24

Shao Sosa x Nobi – Lone Wolf And Kub

Music is timeless and life’s greatest time machine. I think we all have a story about some of the first songs we heard our parents playing when we were younger. Imagine the thought of your first introduction to music coming back full circle and being able to re-live that experience in a new way. Maybe it will become something we see more in the future but Shao Sosa’s & Nobi’s “Lone Wolf & Kub” album is one of the few father son album collaborations that I’m aware of. Shao Sosa is an artist I first heard about when he was going by Shaolin on Acropolis Records. It was some of the first rap I had heard about from the eastern side of Washington. His music was definitely more west coast street during this time and I would say even much so until the name changed to Shao Sosa years later. In a lot of ways, you would think this couldn’t work because generationally the music is so different but creatively you can tell a lot of work went into this. A mature Shao Sosa and a young mind like Nobi the balance just works. The album has some lightness but is very personal. The two are able to address some real-life topics but from their own viewpoints and as a listener you can relate to both sides. Conceptually the album is very well put together and I think maybe because of the personal relationship they actually bring out the best in each other!

It’s a busy weekend in the Baloogz-a-sphere and I’d love to see y’all at one (or all) of these fantastic events. There will be a special prize if you make it to all of them.

Starting it off on Friday I’m opening up the night for Tacoma’s premier boulevardier connoisseur and e-bike rider @grieves with a dj set of primarily classic hip hop to transcend you to place of nostalgia and what the hip hop in the NW ment to me we keeping this digital so pull up to see what i actually end up playing lol.

Saturday we got an early set at 11am of mid 2000’s rap and snap music on vinyl (that i mainly bought in high school yeah im old) for all our skater ppl at @themethod253 roast ride (rip and ram) skate jam downtown.

After a mid evening bartending gig I’ll rush across town. To @oliviaphaze bday extravaganza (at a secret location dm for more info) starting at 10pm and raging till the wee hours of the morning (think HQ vybez) spinning my favorite collection of dance music prolly jungle, house, UKG & maybe a splash of 140 we will be rotating sets throughout the night so come early and stay late.

Then we collect a couple hours of rest and rinse and repeat for the @tacomasundaymarket at the Broadway Plaza with @djqj_ where I’ll flex some easy listening jazz, samba, drum & bass, amapiano & house lots of edits too.

Tacoma is alive and vibrant s/o to everyone making this community thrive and providing opportunities for me to remind yall I’m the best DJ in the southsound of this universe.

*I am only taking your requests if you bring me a bottle of natural wine

The homie @shaososa popped in for a minute to tell @freshjuicemedia about the making of the very cool animated video that they made for @wolfkub509’s video game inspired song “Pixels” with @carterfilmstv 👾 And of course tip us off about the release of their Expansion Pack!

Healthy living is always the goal so we brought on Lifestyle Consultant and Chef @jillianajade of @nuyou_cooking last week to teach us on @freshjuicemedia how to do it better! @locvhontvs of Van City’s The Real Ones delivered a powerful live performance and shared how she navigates a relationship with @tiagovasquezmusic while also being unapologetically honest with her rhymes. Even former guest @shaososa of @wolfkub509 dropped by to share about their new expansion pack and debut their animated video for “Pixels.” And if you keep watching you’ll see how @ogmambo gets down 🤣🪩 A personality fueled episode for sure which we enjoyed while thoroughly enjoying Jill’s spinach vegan enchiladas 🌱
