A non-partisan, for purpose organisation that inspires and equips more women to run for public office in Australia.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

We are deeply troubled by the horrific attack on MP Helen Haines this week. What has happened this week is horrendous. We back our grantee partner @womenelectionoz in their push to bring women into parliament and protect Australian female politicians in their public life.

Women for Election’s Licia and I, caught up to discuss women’s safety in public life.

Every woman deserves to serve her community without fear.

Political violence has no place in our democracy.

Our thoughts are with @helenhainesindi and her family as she faces critical injuries. A man is alleged to have deliberately hit her with a car outside her electorate office.

Violence is always a choice someone makes; it should have no place in Australian democracy or our communities.

A recent report from @womenelectionoz reveals that female elected representatives and candidates are facing growing levels of online abuse and intimidation.

Women have the right to be safe everywhere always. Orange tile that says ‘Women have the right to be safe everywhere. At home at work in the community, and in public office.’

I stand with Helen Haines. I stand against misogyny and violence. We must protect our democracy, our community, our women.

I’ve only met Helen twice (each time a delight and privilege) but she has long been a role model for me. She is everything a community needs in an MP — smart, kind, genuine and incredibly hardworking.

To my enormous delight she told me at our first meeting that she is a FixItChicks fan. Helen is the ultimate FixItChick. Doing all she possibly can to help fix things for her community and create positive change.

Today, I am deeply sad. This t-shirt by @womenelectionoz seems like the right message to be sending and it is giving me the strength to get out and do positive things. I encourage people to read the research published by Women For Election just two months ago: Online Abuse and Women’s Political Participation.

I’m also a recent participant in the @pathways_to_politics course. It will come as no surprise, that much of our discussion was about the challenges and dangers we face as women. We focus on the online abuse which, in itself, is appalling and so much worse for women politicians… but we all sense, and the research suggests, physical abuse is the next step.

I am no expert in this area but I know things have to change and I am committed to being part of that change.

Sending all my love, strength and FixItChick Jenergy to the incredible and inspiring human, @helenhainesindi.

Tasmania - Local Government Elections are happening.

In 2022, 42.5% of elected councillors were women but this year there's only 35% of nominations from women.

WE NEED MORE WOMEN ON COUNCIL NOT LESS!

Our research identifies online abuse as one of the major barriers limiting women’s political participation, affecting candidate recruitment, retention, and wellbeing. But no one should have to choose between participating in democracy and protecting their wellbeing.

Our friends at @womenelectionoz are running a free webinar on 7 October for women and gender diverse politicians and candidates (and their communications staff) to learn about the Face Forward initiative.

Face Forward brings together real-time protection for people in public life and applied research that strengthens the systems around them.

This program, led by Areto, is designed to automatically filter out harmful and abusive comments and detect escalating harassment. GIWL is undertaking research as part of the initiative to build evidence, insights and frameworks that governments and organisations can use to address the ways technology-facilitated gender-based violence can impact democratic participation. You can register for this free webinar at wfe.org.au

Last week was another busy time in Canberra: with local teachers recognised for their work, nurses taking on the Capital, celebrating Democracy and highlighting healthcare amongst many other things!

I’m back in Bullwinkel, but take a look at the second half of my sitting fortnight in Parliament!

I tend to think of election day, with its
Democracy Sausages, as being ‘Democracy Day’.

But did you know that today, September 15, is officially the International Day of Democracy?

I headed over to Parliament House at lunchtime to celebrate it with the wonderful team from @womenelectionoz who do amazing work helping women from across the political spectrum get elected to parliaments around Australia.

It was great to catch up with @leanne_foresti_act (pictured), @liciaheath , and the other attendees.

88% of women have experienced online abuse or intimidation linked to their political involvement.

That abuse ranges from misogynistic and gendered abuse, coordinated trolling and comments about appearance, to threats, intimidation and doxxing.

And 64% of women in political office say this abuse has made them less likely to run, seek higher office, or encourage other women to do so.

That is not good enough.

This International Day of Democracy, we celebrate the principles and values that underpin our democracy. But we must also recognise that our democracy is stronger when women can participate safely, equally and without fear.

We must do better. We must treat women better.

I’m proud to be part of such a diverse Albanese Labor Government and proud to stand alongside women who are putting themselves forward to lead and make a difference.

More women in politics means a stronger democracy for all.

An electrifying two days at @parliamenthousecanberra for the launch of ELECTR⚡️FY AUSTRALIA. To top it off today was International Day of Democracy and @womenelectionoz had a celebratory lunch event where I won a Democracy Warrior t-shirt 💚

Democracy was certainly buzzing over these two days. It was great to catch up with many of my excellent policy wonk and energy advocacy friends (or as I like to call them lobbyists for the planet!) from the EEC, ECA, BZE, ACOSS, ASBEC, GBCA, IGCC, EVC, JEC, SEC… to name a few of my favourite energy advocacy org acronyms! Also great to meet with some MPs.

Politics and advocacy are actions… and there was plenty of energy and action to be observed. Democracy at work.

Now we need to recharge our batteries for a bit 😴🪫🔋

In the last pic I’m reminding you to watch @biglittlereno.tv on Sunday 27th at 4:30pm on 9LIFE if you want to see home energy efficiency and electrification in action.
