Who does the big sister go and sit with?

At boarding school, when @rubyriethmuller was flat or homesick, she didn’t go to a teacher, and she didn’t ring home. She went down the corridor and sat on the end of an older girl’s bed. Years later she built @womnkind for teenage girls and gender-diverse young people in schools all over Australia.

This Saturday she talks about that corridor, the label she didn’t want at sixteen, and who she goes and sits with now.

Saturday 24 October, 9:01am, @radionorthernbeaches 88.7 and 90.3. Podcast and YouTube the same day.

What do young women want us to hear? This International Day of the Girl, we’re handing them the floor.

Today is a chance to celebrate girls’ potential and consider what they need to fulfil it: safety, education, support and a say in the decisions shaping their lives. Girls are often told they can be anything. Making that promise a reality takes more than encouragement.

Three young changemakers - Ruby Riethmuller, Anjali Sharma and Lucy Skelton - share their stories, the issues driving them and what they wish every girl knew about her own potential. From protecting girlhood to accessing mental health support and having a seat where decisions are made, their experiences remind us why girls need opportunities to speak up - and why we need to listen and act.

Read their stories at the link in bio. Tag a girl who inspires you below!

Still not over Sunday 🤩✍🏼

I ran my first ever goal setting session at the @womnkind event on Sunday, helping a room of young people set goals from their values, not pressure.

It felt like sitting around one big kitchen table. Thank you for having me and I can’t overstate how much this meant!!

Here’s to being on your own side 💛🫂

Some seriously special vibes at the @womnkind event I attended today. The focus on mental health and wellbeing for young women was front and centre with some poetic words in the life story so far of @gracetoombs from @heyjuneworld. And a bunch of insightful lessons from Lennox Wade of @snacktember_au , Darrin Brooker of wefutureleaders , Nikki Riesel and Polina Billinksy Mycak. My teenage daughter and her friend left feeling seen, inspired and lighter. An extra pep in their step as we wandered in the sunshine afterwards. ☀️Thank you for having me @rubyriethmuller What a special ‘dining room table’ you have built for young women to gather around Australia. 🩷🩷🩷🩷

Always such a pleasure being at a woman-kind event. And what a privilege to share a panel with the amazing Lucy Kough from Tap the Gap & the inimitable Darian Brooker from We, Future Leaders. Thanks for having me and for letting me share about my Snacktember journey.

🚨 Gaurav Khanna–Akanksha Chamola

25 years. Thousands of young leaders. One magical program.

Last week was an absolutely incredible week at the Y NSW Youth Parliament 2026. From passionate debates in the NSW Parliament chamber to late-night chats, new friendships, and unforgettable behind-the-scenes moments, this year’s program showcased exactly why young people belong at the centre of decision-making.

Over the week, young people in grades 10-12 from across NSW stepped up and brought their ideas for a better state to the floor, demonstrating the power of youth voice in action.

As we celebrate 25 years of the Y NSW Youth Parliament, we’re reminded that young people aren’t just the leaders of tomorrow, they’re leading conversations, creating change and shaping communities today.

From one of our 2026 participants:

“Participating in the Y NSW Youth Parliament has really broadened my perspective on civic engagement and leadership. It’s given me the confidence to speak up about issues I care about and has shown me that young people can truly influence change.”

A huge thank you to our partners @nswparliament @officeforyouthnsw and @scapeau , whose commitment to backing young voices continues to create opportunities for these changemakers.

Thank you to the many Members of Parliament for your support of our Youth Parliamentarians throughout the week.

To every young person, staff member, volunteer and supporter who made this week possible, thank you for being part of the legacy. Here’s to 25 more years!

We could honestly not be more delighted to share that the remarkable woman who is Ruby Riethmuller, is soon joining the SITC board!

Ruby is many, many things - including, above all, a truly kind, generous, empathetic leader who is deeply passionate about social change and advocacy, with a particular focus on young people. She was a 2026 Young Australian of the Year nominee, was recently announced as a Cartier Women's Initiative Fellow, and is the founder of Womn-Kind, a leading preventive youth mental health organisation that's supported more than 50,000 adolescent girls and gender-diverse young people across Australia and 37 countries.

If all that isn't enough, she also serves as Deputy Commissioner (Lived Experience) at the Mental Health Commission of New South Wales.

Ruby also grew up on a farm in regional New South Wales, and she said the work of our not-for-profit matters deeply to her as she's witnessed much of what we advocate around, an and is passionate about how (as she says) we've created 'a space for honesty where there has been silence, connection where there has been isolation and hope where it may have been lost....'

''To me, at its heart, the work of SITC is not simply about alcohol or harm. It is about people. It is about creating communities where individuals feel safe enough to be honest about what they're carrying and supported enough to know they do not have to carry it alone.

''Shan, Flip, Tim, and the SITC team have built a powerful legacy. They've created far more than an organisation; they've created a movement that's saving and changing lives, challenging stigma, and giving people permission to have the hard conversations.

''I am deeply honoured to have been invited to join the Board and to walk alongside Shanna and the team as they continue this important work. For me, this is an opportunity to contribute to the heart of our country and the communities that mean so much to me - regional, rural and remote Australia.''

_____

Ladies and gents - please say G'day to this young leader we're so thrilled to have come to know, love, and appreciate, and welcome on board!

Sometimes, we wish for people we care about to also ask about us genuinely, the way we ask about them.

When was the last time someone asked how you were and you told them the actual truth?
You can drop your answer in the comments if you can.

See you next week for Episode 2.
