Who owns belongings in a museum?

This weekend, we brought SWANA community members to explore the Palestinian belongings in the Horniman Museum’s collection, engaging with their records to rewrite and reclaim their histories.

"Embroidered cloth, Palestine"

Often, that's the whole label! The @hornimanmuseumgardens has a big collection of Palestinian Tatreez (embroidery) but these belongings rarely have records of their maker, village, story.

On Sat 22 August we're going in to change that.

The Text in Textile is a hands-on afternoon with the Horniman's SWANA collection, where we learn to actually read Tatreez (what the motifs mean, where they come from, and the harder questions of appropriation and erasure sitting alongside them).

Haya Mustafa Natsheh from @qutbe.h will teach us to read the patterns and Aicha El Alaoui (@wordsinmotion__ ) will lead us through writing exercises to put the stories back.

This workshop feeds directly into our community exhibition at the Horniman opening December 2026.

Sowing Together is a literary workshop led by @wordsinmotion__ and dedicated to stories of hope, growth, and transformation. Together, we will read a selection of carefully chosen texts that speak about renewal in nature and in ourselves, using them as a starting point for reflection and shared discussion.

Through guided writing and reflection exercises, we will explore what renewal means to us personally, how change takes shape in our lives, and how stories can help us understand moments of becoming. This is a space for slowing down, listening, and writing from what emerges in conversation and silence alike.

The pen. The sword. The label on the wall that decided what our culture & heritage means.

On Sunday 14 June, we're gathering @hornimanmuseumgardens to look at swords, daggers, pencil reeds, and maps from their SWANA collection and rewrite / reclaim the stories they've been given.

With @mel.scribbles , we'll examine the original museum labels & belongings to ask what they erase, and write back.

@siel.maroc has been a tradition for years now and it’s always a pleasure to mingle, meet people and spend time with my friends. This year, I went twice and it was a great experience although I didn’t get to buy a lot of books. 👀

Premier weekend du @siel.maroc 2026, et le Pavillon France a mis la barre très haut. Annie Ernaux, @morganemoncomble, @inocasablanca, @romanebohringerofficiel, des visites officielles, des ateliers, des prix, des rencontres… Rabat a vécu quelque chose. 🇫🇷🇲🇦

Et ce n'est pas fini. Le SIEL continue jusqu'au 10 mai... et la suite s'annonce tout aussi forte. 📅
