I’ve been working on this post for a while as I’m often asked questions about Moroccan literature 🇲🇦 (favorite books, classics etc). I also rarely see Moroccan Literature on #bookstagram so this is an opportunity to increase its representation and to shed light on authors that deserve more attention!

Direction Sudan 🇸🇩

I read Minaret by Sudanese author Leila Aboulela a few months ago and I’ve wanted to explore more of her work ever since.

Minaret takes places between Khartoum and London. It tells the story of Najwa, a privileged young girl from Sudan who loses everything she has when she immigrates to the UK. Najwa seeks political asylum in London, fleeing a coup and ambiguous family accusations in her home country.

This fresh start triggers a spiritual awakening as she struggles to find a sense of belonging and meaning in her new life. Najwa’s character development is to me, the highlight of this novel. I also loved the way Leila Aboulela explored themes of identity, migration, faith, and friendship.

Before Gibran wrote The Prophet, he was part of something bigger: a generation of Arab writers who left home and, in the process, shaped Arab literature from that experience.

Adab al-mahjar, the literature of migration, was written by people caught between languages, between continents, between the place they came from and the place that would never quite let them belong. Out of that in-betweenness came some of the most interesting, most tender writing in the Arabic canon.

Some of you have asked if my workshops could happen online, so here we are: I’m happy to announce that my next workshop, Lost & Found in Translation, will be available both in-person and online !

This workshop explores, through reading and writing, the things language carries, the space a word can hold that another language cannot fully enter. It’s for the words that don’t always translate well, where I’ll guide you through reflections, readings, and creative writing prompts to find space for…the unnamable.

Three ways to join us:

IN PERSON: Saturday, September 19th, 4-6pm, Chellah, Rabat in partnership with @chellah.rabat & @rabatsites
Fee to participate: 200 DHS ➡️ DM to reserve your spot 📩

ONLINE: Tuesday, September 15th or Thursday, September 24th, 7-8:30pm (GMT+1). The fee is £15 / €18. Link in bio to book 🔗

No experience in writing required, just curiosity and a love for words ✍🏻 📚

What stories get passed on from hands to thread? What does textile hold that words cannot?

These were some of the questions we sat with together during our Text in Textile workshop with @hekayyatna and @qutbe.h at @hornimanmuseumgardens.

There is something truly special about coming together to learn how to read tatreez and to write the stories each of us saw in the pieces on display at the museum. It felt like weaving our own communal archive, one word at a time, in a space that held our curiosity and creativity so generously.

Huge thanks to everyone who came, and lots of gratitude for the beautiful encounters this workshop held!
