Meanwhile in the studio…

A few photographs back from my time in Lisbon with @theboneproject.co, and a little update on where my practice is heading.

This year I’ve been doing something that still feels quite scary: writing.

I’ve been going back through 20 years of my practice and 13 bodies of work, trying to understand not only what I made, but what was happening around the photographs. The relationships, conversations, obsessions, grief, ridiculous decisions, things I didn’t understand at the time and things I probably still don’t understand now.

I’m starting to realise how much a photograph doesn’t tell us.

I’ve recently been supported by Arts Council England to develop this through ‘Finding My Voice on the Page’, and my few days writing with The Bone Project in Lisbon pushed it somewhere much deeper.

I’m not trying to write about my photographs in the way I might have done for an exhibition text or artist statement. I’m using writing to get underneath them. To see what else is there.

I have absolutely no idea where all of this is going yet. But there’s something delicious about that. Do it scared … as they say!

Thank you again to @theboneproject.co @helensproat @abigailbergstrom ❤️❤️❤️

And finally a reminder to all - let your practice evolve and develop- you don’t need to ‘stay in your lane!’

The most powerful thing about these few days? Was sitting around a table. And the group REALLY listening.

Having a beautiful space to be in. Beautiful whole food to eat. Being supported. Having the time and permission to go somewhere much deeper than I expected.

It was transformative.

And I’ve come home thinking: I want more of this.

So I’m 100% going to spend some of my winter creating something around a table for artists and creatives in Margate!! A space to eat, talk, share, listen. Details coming soon because, knowing me, I’ll probably get excited and set it up very quickly 😂

A huge thank you to Abigail @abigailbergstrom and Helen @helensproat for holding us through the impeccable programme they’ve created, and to the brilliant women I got to share the Bone Project table with in Lisbon. A real privilege ❤️

And go and check out The Bone Project @theboneproject.co and the work they’re doing.

But be prepared. It wasn’t about becoming a better writer.

It’s about meeting yourself on the page. Going into the uncomfortable - messy bits. The grief. The monsters. The stuff you’d like to keep neatly packed away / hidden away.

I’m aware this update is a little all over the place but hey I’m in a bikini so let’s just call this post a social experiment.
