World Afro Day is barely 1month away.
From 15–17 September 2026, we @worldafroday are doing a three-day street takeover, bringing our 10th celebration to Lower Stable Street, Coal Drops Yard, King’s Cross, London.

The CROWN Act (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) is a US law movement started in 2019 to stop race-based hair bias. It bans schools and jobs from punishing people for natural hair styles like braids, locs, and twists.

In my country Nigeria 🇳🇬, the Giant of Africa, and most parts of the African continent how is the hair growing out of our scalp viewed? My hair was full and long in primary 5 , only to see it in clumps on the floor of the barbing saloon, on Faulks road, Aba in 1996. This was part of being prepped to be shipped off to boarding school in Calabar.
For the first time I saw the shape of my skull and all the corners.
I was so shocked that it it wasn’t a SMOOTH GLOBE like in the integrated science textbooks, … but more octagonal.
In school, my gra-gra Aba self, in comparison to the cool of ‘Calabarians’ was always getting into trouble The knocks from senior students resounded and REVEBEREATED each time I let my sharp mouth 👄 go loose. I could talk o, and YES! I can still give a ‘blistering read’. Njakiri and iko-onu is part of Mbaise life…
I’ve still not forgiven the barber, who said as I went for my falling/shaven hair ‘fine girl now breeze and common sense can enter your brain’ 🧠

Why do we still have the heads of our girls going into secondary school under the guise that they will be distracted, but foreign female students are left to grow theirs?
Why do we in some parts of the country shave the heads of widows… in their mourning, let’s further demean them? Do we shave the heads of widowers when their wives die? … or quickly find him a new wife…..
My cover picture is from 10 years ago as a 2nd year GP trainee, in the same surgery/clinic I work now. There was no white hair in sight, now I look like Prof Wole, with more white hair 🧑‍🦳 than my Dad. Stress and wisdom have united in my AFRO.
