Series Spotlight: Cine Con Cultura 🎊

Cine con Cultura is Ithaca’s annual Latin American Film Festival and takes place during Latinx Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15, 2026).

The festival celebrates innovative filmmaking practices across Latin America and is organized by Cultura Ithaca! and Latino Civic Association of Tompkins County in collaboration with Ithaca College, Cornell Cinema, and the Department of Romance Studies at Cornell. Screenings are presented at multiple sites across Ithaca, including Cinemapolis, Ithaca College, and Cornell Cinema.

This year’s line-up at Cornell Cinema was selected in collaboration with faculty from the Department of Romance Studies. It includes an expansive variety of genres and topics and films from Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Argentina. Highlights include Argentinian filmmaker Lucrecia Martel's OUR LAND (2026) and a special screening and discussion with visiting filmmaker Michelle Garza Cervera, director of HUESERA: THE BONE WOMAN (2023) — which kicks off the festival on Monday, 9/14 at 6pm!

All events are free and open to the public, thanks to generous sponsorship by the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program, the Department of Romance Studies, the Latino/a Studies Program, and Cine Con Cultura.

Join us on Wednesday at 5pm in Business 202 for a presentation by Julianna Lasky!

In May, Julianna is graduating from Brandeis University with a Bachelor’s in Anthropology, Hispanic Studies, and Latin American, the Caribbean, Latinx Studies (LACLS).

Her senior thesis explores how Coahuiltecan mission descendants, a collection of tribes native to South Texas that underwent Spanish missionization, renegotiate their identity over generations, responding to a state that labels them extinct. She investigates this question in collaboration with the American Indian of the San Antonio Colonial Missions (AITSCM). By using oral histories and scholarly literature, she navigates where San Antonio mission descendants fit within a literature that often leaves out non-federally recognized tribes and tribes that cross the borderlands.

Faculty mentorship—or, to put it differently, faculty devotion to student learning—is the beating heart of H&S. Our goal is to empower students to pursue learning that happens outside of the classroom through internships, community engagement, and meaningful participation in professional associations and conferences. Our students work hard to prepare for these opportunities, and our goal is to ensure that we can support them fully and robustly so that they can gain the skills and experience that they’ll need to make an impact in their areas.

Your generous gift towards our annual fund makes a big difference to our students and our ability to support them when they engage in hands-on learning outside of the classroom..

H&S belongs to and serves the greater community. Your gift to the IC Annual Fund for Humanities & Sciences is instrumental in helping us empower students to integrate their learning in “real-world” contexts—through concrete activities, such as, conference travel, access to professional development, H&S Summer Scholars, and much much more.

• Stroll through world class art museums for free such as the Tate Modern or Tate Britain
• Explore the charm of Bloomsbury, where literary icons like Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury Group once lived and worked.
• Visit iconic landmarks from classic and modern literature, from Charles Dickens’ London to Harry Potter’s Platform 9¾.

“These films unwind more nuanced views about why people leave and why they return home. They break the binary opposition between the blissful “American Dream” and the dark, oppressive, and impossible “Mexico-filter-y” life migrants seek to escape. Films such as “Traffic” (Steven Soderbergh, 2000) popularized this Mexico-filter by toning scenes in Mexico and the Global South with sepia. They represent scorching-hot, stark, dry, dusty deserts and spaces. Often featuring violent and despairing images, this filter functions as a short-hand for stereotypical representations of the Global South. In contrast, films of the return break this visual logic, generating new paradigms about place and home.”
