Series Spotlight: Cine Con Cultura 🎊

Cine con Cultura is Ithaca’s annual Latin American Film Festival and takes place during Latinx Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15, 2026).

The festival celebrates innovative filmmaking practices across Latin America and is organized by Cultura Ithaca! and Latino Civic Association of Tompkins County in collaboration with Ithaca College, Cornell Cinema, and the Department of Romance Studies at Cornell. Screenings are presented at multiple sites across Ithaca, including Cinemapolis, Ithaca College, and Cornell Cinema.

This year’s line-up at Cornell Cinema was selected in collaboration with faculty from the Department of Romance Studies. It includes an expansive variety of genres and topics and films from Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Argentina. Highlights include Argentinian filmmaker Lucrecia Martel's OUR LAND (2026) and a special screening and discussion with visiting filmmaker Michelle Garza Cervera, director of HUESERA: THE BONE WOMAN (2023) — which kicks off the festival on Monday, 9/14 at 6pm!

All events are free and open to the public, thanks to generous sponsorship by the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program, the Department of Romance Studies, the Latino/a Studies Program, and Cine Con Cultura.

Today Latinx poet Yéssica Martínez read some of her work and conducted a poetry workshop with the @ithacacollege students in our Latina/o/x Literatures class. We were so excited to have her join our class as one of the published authors in the recent anthology “Here to Stay” (2024). We had been reading the Nuyorican Poets of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s and eventually getting to read contemporary Latinx poetry. Yéssica is part of that movement. Thank you so much for joining our class and for exposing my students to Cavafy’s “Itaka” poem. “Where is your Itaka?” Yéssica asked. “Where is the place where you would like to go back to?” It was definitely an amazing experience to think about textures and memories too as part of the creative writing process. Yesterday professor Gladys Varona-Lacey invited Bolivian writer and Cornell Professor Liliana Colanzi @lilianacolanzi to her Latin American Fiction class @ithacacollege to read from her latest award winning book “Ustedes brillan en lo oscuro.” Prof. Colanzi read a section from her short story “Atomito” about a nuclear plant currently under construction in the city of El Alto in Bolivia. Students and colleagues in the Latin American and Caribbean Studies program at IC were able to ask her questions after the reading and it was so much fun! We all learned a lot about Bolivian history and even about important paintings from colonial times like “La virgen de Potosí.” Thank you to Prof. Varona-Lacey for hosting and to writer Liliana Colanzi for sharing her stories with us. #bolovianoiterature #bolivia #latinamericanfiction #latinamerica #bolivia #ithaca #newyork #literatura #literaturaboliviana #bolivia #nuevayork #américalatina taken in Ithaca College by @worldlanguagesic
